Saints V Gillingham The Verdict
Saints V Gillingham The Verdict
Tuesday, 4th May 2010 12:43

34 years to the day after winning at Wembley Saints got beat by Gillingham, thats progress for you.

Saints were outplayed by Gillingham from the start of the game and in truth never really looked up for it, but although Exeter City fans will critiscise Alan pardew for fielding a weakened team, I would not neccesarily agree with them that it was weakened.

After all replacing Rickie Lambert with David Connolly isnt that too shabby a change and truth is he and Lee Barnard would walk into every other League 1 side, in the middle Lloyd James was an enforced change and at the back Joseph Mills is hardly inexperienced having played regularly in the Scunthorpe side that stormed to the play offs last season, leaving only Aaron Martin as the so called weak link, and he probably played better than most.

No the real problem was that this was a Gillingham side who desperately wanted to win and they were playing a side that looked like they would be going on line after the game to book their holidays.

Some would also say that this was unfair on the 2,500 Saints supporters who made the trip, I disagree, the season was over we could gain nothing from this game apart from what we did, ie taking a look at a couple of the fringe players.

So Saints finished the away season on a defeat ironically enough against a bottom seven side meaning that in those seven games on the road we mustered a total of seven points and their you have why Saints do not sit in a play off position today.
