Atalanta Submit Increased Bid For Sulemana

Italian club Atalanta, now managed by former Southampton manager Ivan Juric are determined to get Kamaldeen Sulemana and after having one bid turned down, the Italian media is suggesting that they have increased their offer and look likely to succeed this time.

When the likes of Trabzonspor and other Turkish clubs have come knocking at the St Mary's door trying to sign our players, it rarely ends well, they haggle like they are in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, trying to fleece a tourist for a fake T shirt.

But in most of the rest of Europe it is different and it seems that Atalanta in Italy are a club who when they are chasing a transfer target, they get serious with their bids.

Last week they had a bid for 14 million Euros turned down by Southampton for Kamaldeen Sulemana, but now according to football-italia.net they have submitted a second increased bid.

Saints signed Sulemana for around £22 million sterling and it is said that Southampton's price is 18 million Euro's at todays exchange rate about £15.7 million.

If that fee is reached then a £6.3 million loss on Sulemana will not be a disaster for Saints given his 2 1/2 years at the club.

The reality is that the clubs will meet somewhere in the middle at about 16 million euros, so Saints would get just under £14 million, an £8 million loss on the original deal, but again I think at this price Saints will do business, it is a player off the books who has contribute little and to get £14 million in the transfer kitty plus a big chunk of wages off the pay roll, it will be a good start to the transfer window.

On those rare occasions..he did look like a world beater, but in a team that was failing in every department and where he was picked in different roles, he hasn't looked like the £20+ million player we hoped we had bought. Certainly he has skill and quality and when played in his best role (whatever that is ?) he will be a stand-out player in the right club.

Many see us as the Championship side we are, and therefore the fees being bantered around for some players reflect that, and so we are unlikely to balance the books on him.
IMO..Saints are right to stand out for every £ we can get. Sulemana deserves the chance to play at a better level and...if he's a success ...will come back to a top Prem. side in a year or two. I just hope we have a decent sell-on clause written into the contract.

We've already lost money on this deal and the sooner he is off the books the better (and richer) the club will be. The same goes for Onuachu in his on-off deal with the Turkish side who are refusing to increase their bid, but Saints persist in hitting their head against a brick wall over the actual fee + add-ons.

Neither of these fellas will play for us again, and so as soon as they give up their shirt numbers, the sooner we can see who Will has in mind to replace them. GET IT DONE PDQ.

I've tried to work out from the ffp, psr, or whatever the rules are currently tagged with, regulations about the financial impact of selling players at a loss. Tbh I'm none the wiser and certainly more confused because the variable on sustainability are like playing snakes and ladders. A question for any poster, or Nick, if we sell players at a loss does that reduce the club's ability to bring in new players? Indeed, can the losses be offset by giving academy developed players modest amounts of first team playing time? Are there any of the current financial constraints that can't be beaten by the wealthy clubs legal teams? Yes, no, maybe?
Other than that, neither Onuachu or Kamaldeen are the club's future and most of our surplus players aren't viable commodities so probably time to bite the bullet regardless.
