British sinking of the French fleet 20:24 - Sep 16 with 3189 views | trampie | Was the British sinking of a large portion of the French fleet in North Ãfrica in 1940 necessary ? The British conduct in the war was superb and something rightly to be proud of but was the sinking and huge loss of life suffered by our allies at our own hands necessary ? When we bombed Germán cities, they were the enemy and had bombed us but attacking the French to make sure the Germans did not get their ships when the French assured us they would never let the Germans get their ships did not seem cricket.

No, but Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain has been in the news a lot recently and I had a Grandmother in Oran back in the day who could speak Welsh and French and the attack on the French fleet there at that time seemed to be below the belt, but key to us winning the war as it told the World that we would do what it took no matter what, the story was if the Germans had invaded then we would have used poison gas on them, the British are ferocious fighters and when their backs are against the wall then the rest can watch out. They were desperate times and we would seemingly take desperate measures to win, it did not seem by our actions that we had control over the playing field during the summer months in 1940.

Most of the French were our allies and they took us killing their sailors (1,200 odd sailors ?) as a betrayal and a few years later true to their word they scuttled the rest of their fleet in Toulon to stop the Germans taking control of the fleet, the head of French navy gave the British a I told you so and the head of the British fleet that had attacked the French in their harbour was very upset about what we had done and that we would not have a friend in the World.

British sinking of the French fleet on 20:50 - Sep 16 with 1859 views | EvenThisNameIsTaken | Any suspicions regarding the use of the fleet in the hands of the germans during these times needed to be acted upon, regardless of any assurances provided by the french. Afterall, didn't the french also assure the world the nazis wouldn't be able to invade France due to the 'heavily fortified' Maginot Line?? The french capitulated and while you may claim the move by the british was 'under the belt', you seem to forget that Britain was fighting for its life.

Actually despite the aura of invincibility that surrounds Blitzkrieg in those sectors where the Germans did actually try to assault The Maginot Line in 1940 they were stopped in their tracks with heavy losses. The line's failing was it didn't extend beyond French borders.
