The Curse of Awards 10:04 - Jan 29 with 2629 viewsThe_DJ

Think the football gods have it in for us in January will a losing streak , loss of form , and injuries to key players.
Can wait for February to start and a New Manager / Player of the month to be awarded.

Or it's just a coincidence.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

I suspect more than a coincidence, psychology will probably play a subliminal part.

Not sure how you come to that conclusion.

Regardless of how the award was won, there is less chance (1/3) of winning the next game than not winning it (2/3).

Are those the scores in brackets?

Poll: What is it to be then?

A last minute defeat followed by 4 -0 and 4 -0 suggests the dark mystical powers of the football gods have been set upon us until the awards are won again.

Roll on February. .........

... they were preceded by a 2-0 win at Barrow, the day after the award was announced.

Hence the psychology theory holds firm, not enough time for it to subliminally impact on players and managers

The curse kicks in 2 days after the awards are announced usually.

Questionable probability teaching.

I pointed this out last week, but my musings were not well liked by TVOS.

Now that it's been brought up again, I've been looking into it a little deeper, in the hope of shedding light on what genuinely seems to be a curse on the winning team.

This season in L1 as a current example.

August: Parkinson at Bolton won it... next 3 games D D L
September Flitcroft at Bury won it... next 3 games L L L
October Parkinson at Bolton won it next 3 games W L L
November Alexander at Scunny won it...next 3 games D L W
December Hill at Dale won it..... next 3 games W W L

So... for the form teams in the division at the time, the totals are 4 wins, 3 draws and 8 losses.

I'd say that there may well be something in the "curse" theory... as normally, you'd expect form teams to have a better than even chance of continuing their form, but the opposite seems to happen, plus we, for instance have suffered a remarkable series of injuries.

There is certainly much more to it than mere mathematics.

It's a very small sample, though...

What are the stats on the other divisional winners?

Think TVOS pointed out that the award was made after the Walsall game so our record may be
W L L L.
As the curse takes a couple of days to take effect L L L would be the sequence.

Think bury had a similar record that fortunately continued.

The curse is more mystic than mathematical.
