British PMs Since WW2 07:10 - Sep 11 with 112 viewsspell_chekker

Can you name them?

And going into greater detail, the number of terms they served.

Also, if they resigned and a deputy had to take their place.

Also, If they were PM then lost a subsequent election and later were reelected, came back.

The whole sequence of things.

Of course, you can look it up on the internet if you want to cheat but let's see what you know.

Firstly, we must have finished the war with Churchill still in charge so he's number 1. (I'm probably wrong already)

Then Clement Atlee, Labour, 1 term

Yes, but I'll let others play first. Attlee actually won 2 elections 1945 & 1950. Lost a snap election in 1951 despite winning more votes than the Tories.

Attlee, Churchill, Eden, McMillan, Douglas-Hume, Wilson, Heath, Callaghan, Thatcher, Major, Blair, Brown, Cameron, May and BJ.

Not many good ones there.

Icon? It's all Rio Ferdinand's fault.

Churchill - Right man for the war.

Attlee - Right man after the war.

Can't really judge PMs before I was born as didn't experience their leadership.

Finding a good leader is like finding a dog that can speak Norwegian.

By the nature of the job and the incumbent pressures and considerations it is difficult for most to be better than satisfactory.

Throw in media bias and most are doomed to mediocrity or worse.

Even the right winger`s darlings Churchill and Thatcher had massive flaws amidst their triumphs.

Difficult job even with a fair wind...

A controversial one for some, including me.

Could Thatcher be considered to be a great leader even by those with were completely against her policies?

I'm saying this on the grounds that her authority was widely accepted by her peers, she had a vision of a brave new world, put in place policies to create this vision, and changed society, moulding it to her ideals.

I'm far from being both a Tory and a fan of hers I hasten to add.

Thatcher was an interesting old bird and had many faults but had great brio and conviction. At the time of the Falklands she really was on her uppers and floundering. The book about her by Jonathon Aitkin is very readable for those that like that kind of stuff...
