Following on from the 'Do you enjoy watching Saints thread'...... 10:11 - Dec 31 with 879 views | TripleNiemi | ....thought i would pose the question of 'when was your favorite era of watching Saints?' A tough call in some respects but i suspect a lot will suggest the L1 / Championship years whilst others whom are of slightly older persuasion might say the 80's when we we runners up etc...and when football was still almost a working 'mans' (am i allowed to say this?) game. For me i have to say that the recent successes we have had following our close demise is right up there but (possibly due to my age) i have to say i loved the 90's at the Dell. Yes, often a relegation scrap, but the tightness of the Archers along with the never say die attitude did it for me. I am old enough to remember the Lawrie Mac years but being blunt i was still pretty young to appreciate what a side we had then.

The 70's & 80's are very much the best decades from the point of view of both success on the field and the fact that commercialism was yet to completely rear it's ugly head, but they were also decades that saw just as much turmoil as this one, All of the decades have seen ups as well as downs, the truth is no football team has a divine right to success, well run clubs get relegated and rich clubs don't always win things in relative terms there are a few clubs having worse seasons than us

Strachan days were great as well. I enjoyed the first couple of years of St. Mary’s a lot.

Probably take a slating for this, but i loved the (albeit) brief Hoddle reign. Really enjoyed watching us then with Dean Richards (R.I.P) and Bridgey etc.

Following on from the 'Do you enjoy watching Saints thread'...... on 12:49 - Dec 31 with 795 views | kingslandstand1 | It probably has to be the Channon, Ball, Keegan era of the early 80's when we were almost unbeatable at the Dell and were guarenteed goals (for and against). The atmosphere was decent and away teams genuinely did not like coming to us Laurie Mac had that mix of old and new (experienced and non) players with just that right blend. Happy Days! But also has to be said, playing in the recent Koeman era when we were getting praise from everywhere and we tended to be others "2nd team" cos of the way we played and we even started speaking about possiblt Champions League position at some points - ok, we then came back to earth, but there was great pride in being a Saints fan Then it all went t1ts up!

Why take a slating? Still probably one of the best tacticians we ever had as a manager. He was just a coont for the way in which he left us, although the New Year (?) 4-0 drubbing of him was very delightful soon after

For me the 1978 promotion season and next 7 years or so. An exciting promotion campaign, a league cup final, two fa cup semi's, Europe, regular top 6 finishes, great home records each year and some top games for the memory box. Top players. Top years.

Yeah that is true mate. When he was at his peak he was worth entry fee alone. Imagine if we had him early 80's in that form.

Following on from the 'Do you enjoy watching Saints thread'...... on 17:37 - Dec 31 with 697 views | SalisburySaint | I’ve been watching Saints since mid 60’s and have two periods I’d call my most enjoyable I left school in 1975 and as I was working started going to away games regularly that season, which ended with us winning the Cup, the period after that until 83/84 was brilliant with slow steady progress in the league, promotion back to Div 1, European football, good cup runs and finishing runners up in top flight. Some great away trips in those days winning at all the big clubs and great European trips for me to Marseilles, Anderlecht, Limerick and Hamburg But just as enjoyable was the rise back from league one to Premier League since 2010, the trips away in League one to places like Hartlepool, Orient, Carlisle, Oldham and Johnstone’s Paint trophy. The great season in the Championship where right from the start of the season with performances like 5-2 at Ipswich we looked the part. After first season in Premier we made steady progress with 2 European qualifications and memorable trips to Arnhem, Bere Sheva, Milan and Prague and also another cup final that season. It may have been a bit disappointing the last few seasons, but being a Saints supporter has always been about ups and downs even this season great performances at Pompey, Villa and Chelsea but many poor performances to go with these, but it those good days that make it still worthwhile and enjoyable watching Saints

Coming up from league 1 was brilliant and doing it with such overwhelming positivity. Even this place was upbeat :-)

Football today is rubbish in comparison with those days. Losing against Tranmere wasnt so good. [Post edited 31 Dec 2019 19:09]

The early 80s under Lawrie Mac. The tenure of Glen Hoddle. The early years at St Mary's under Gordon Strachan. The Nigel Adkins years. Teams that earnt respect.

Tell you what Salisbury, being a Saints fan is a damn site better that being a top 6 fan where success is almost always guarenteed and expected and outside of that is suicidal Much prefer the ups and downs of Saints without all the tourists who don't know about the lower divisions with those top 6

Pardon me, but on your thread about 'Is life all that' you state you are 27. So how did you manage to get into games in the late 80? Could you see the game through your old mans sack?
