Martin Chivers 21:08 - Jan 1 with 1658 viewsdirk_doone

Great to see him interviewed on the pitch. He looked remarkably fit for a 74-year-old. His answers were honest and interesting too. His Dad told him to reply to an ad Saints had placed in the local paper (Echo) for youngsters to come to a trial, where he scored two goals. The rest is history.

From Drake to Chivers to Ings, the tradition of Southampton producing great strikers continues.

I think you left a certain Mr Channon out of that short list Dirk

Chivers mentioned Channon in his interview, but he wasn't from Southampton; he was born 35 miles away in Wiltshire, whereas Chivers was from Bitterne.

If we were talking about Southampton academy products, then we could include Shearer.

The number of great strikers we have had over the years is phenomenal, including some of the best in Europe, like Keegan and Shearer.

Chivers was transferred to Spurs and Channon replaced him in the first team. Scored on his debut, 1-1 at Molyneux. Promotion year I think, although not certain.
Martin Chivers was formidable. Wasn't he from Millbrook ?

Correct. My uncle was always saying that it was no problem if Chivers was poached by Spurs as we had this young lad Channon in the reserves who would be even better .....
We sold him for £125,000 which was an English record at the time. Check out his goal scoring for example ....
In the 1965—66 season, he played an integral role as the club finally gained promotion to the top flight (as runners-up), scoring 30 goals from 39 games, generally from crosses provided by Terry Paine and John Sydenham. All his goals were scored from the first 29 games, and he failed to find the net after the end of February.
Phenomenal

Chivers played a big part in ensuring we didn't get relegated in our 1st two seasons in Top Tier football, forming a formidable partnership with Ron Davies and thriving on the endless supply of crosses from Paine and Sydenham, before leaving midway 67/68 season.

The fee of 125,000 was at the time a British Record but included a valuation of about 50,000 for Frank Saul in player exchange, which to be honest was at least double his real worth!!

Who did we sell when Kerry Dixon and David Speedie arrived in a £575.000 deal that didn't work out?

I had a chat with Chivers at Tottenham once. He was a host in one of their corporate dining rooms and I asked him if he preferred Saints of Tottenham. He said Spurs, something that was diplomatically avoided yesterday..! But for whichever club, he was an excellent player.

The dynamic duo who Branf#rt assured us would score more goals than Alan Shearer, and criminally didn't even put in a sel on clause. 15% of the 15 mill (?) Newcastle coughed up would have been handy, but then we may not have ended up with Markus!!

All not bad players for your town, but hardly as good as Harris, Crawford and Tambling by any stretch of the imagination.

Harris, Crawford and Tambling ?

Who were they ? The solicitors that handled your administration ?

Just local lads that went on to score 465 top flight goals. There certainly is a lot of football talent in and around Pompey.

Yes that's right, certainly more top flight players at present than your town.

I see that "I must stop being a retarded feckwit and stop talking to people who can't stand my guts" wasn't on your New Years Resolution List.

Southampton has been a City since 1964, having a Cathedral is not mandatory.
