Anyone do it?

Changing my car in March and just been looking seems some great deals out there. Obviously you never own it but seems a good way to get a brand new car relatively cheaply and avoid issues like depreciation and what might happen to diesels in the future.

Electric is the way forward but not sure the battery life is there yet. Think most range is only max 350-400 miles now unless you pay a fortune.

I hate electric only cars, they all look a bit w*nk.

The future has to be a self-charging hybrid or something other than pure electric.

They'll sort them out, it's all new.

I see there are some self charging hybrids coming out now.

Although 'self charging' is a bit of a marketing misnomer as it implies free energy, virtually all electric vehicles have been self charging to a degree for quite some time.

Pure EVs will use regenerative braking to recover energy normally lost as heat through friction. The amount recovered depends on the power electronics used.

Hybrids obviously charge the battery from the IC engine and always have done.

PHEVs then have the added option of plugging into the grid.

These 'new' self charging hybrids are therefore nothing new at all but the ad campaign is trying to emphasise the benefit of not having to find a charging point. If anything, PHEVs should be labelled as dual charging as there are more options for keeping your battery levels up.

I agree. Just changed my car but didn't consider electric or hybrid this time round. I did however, change from diesel to Petrol.

The range on electric is just not good enough yet.

What happens to all the old electric car batteries when they come to the end of their life ? My local tip won't take them !!

leasing or HP are both best, easy to haggle down as they are all desperate to shift cars
bigger the deposit you can put down the better obviously plus service deals everywhere etc
I would imagine your Fiesta will work out at about a oner

He’s probably thinking along the lines of a mini-van pal, so he has room to transport his carpets.

Anyway, surely a man of your means buys outright?

Same - I went from diesel to petrol. I lost some torque but gained a lot of power instead, plus the tax was cheaper which is bizarre.

I only drive about 6000 miles a year now so a diesel wasn't worth it.

Diesel is more efficient but produces more NOx and particulates for equivalent CO2 level hence the higher tax.

When money’s no object, you buy outright. 22 probably had enough cash for his Tesla laying around in his sock drawer.

Really? How so?

I’m paying £300 a month tax on my company car at the moment so opting out and taking the allowance, thought I’d be much better off. Don’t do many miles now so thought with the allowance and losing company car tax I’d be much better off

IC engines are going to be around for at least 20 years yet and maybe more. Although electric cars have been around longer than IC cars there’s a good reason why petrol and diesel pushed electric to one side and no amount of fuss about CO2 is going to reverse that any time soon.

One simple reason is that there isn’t enough cobalt on the planet to replace every IC engine with a battery. Hydrogen fuel cells are a much more viable way to go in the short and medium term.

Bad idea. I looked into it to get an electric car. You're so much better off talking to the sales person about buying. Don't tell them what you have to spend & tell them you're seeing at least another 2 dealers & have seen 1 already, even if you're lying. Don't feel bad about this they are bending the truth & if you say what your budget is they'll steer you towards a lease for that amount or more. Remember after three years that car goes back or you buy it & if you do it's for more than market value, if you don't you've lost 3 years worth of savings towards a new car. If you decide to lease negotiate, be prepared to walk out of the door. They will follow you, you wont get out the car park.
Try asking dealers about NEW old stock? They may have motors hanging around that they need to get rid of. If you go into a ford dealer tell him that a Vauxhall dealer had a really good deal on old stock but you wanted to see what they could offer & vice versa.
Good luck👍 hope this helps😉
