Jimmy Dickinson did for Pompey, when they were a proud club owned by the fans and had brash statements like "It's Ours" spelt out in murals that stand was named after Dickinson.

It might now be something like the Donald Duck stand in honour of someone their owner was worshipping back in the 40's/50's

We must remember that Sir Alf Ramsey started his professional career at Saints, he was not quite academy as he had his career interupted by the war, but we were his first professional club and he got his first cap for England whilst at the Dell.

You cannot get more England than Sir Alf, but it could have been Pompey he played for.

From wiki

On leaving school in 1934, the 14-year-old Ramsey tried to get a job at the Ford plant, then told his family he intended to become a greengrocer. To that end he became an apprentice at a local branch of the Co-op, delivering groceries on a bicycle. The manual work helped to bulk up Ramsey's physique,[9] but he found himself unable to play organised football because he had to work on Saturday afternoons. After a two-year hiatus, he returned to the game when he joined Five Elms, a newly formed amateur club whose matches on Thursdays fitted with his work schedule.[7] About a year later, during the 1937—38 season, Ramsey was spotted by Ned Liddell, a scout from Portsmouth,[10] then a well-established top-flight club.[11] Liddell offered a contract as an amateur. Rather than signing on the spot, Ramsey asked to take the forms home to examine first; he signed them that night and sent them to Portsmouth by post.[12] Much to Ramsey's disappointment, Portsmouth did not contact him again. He spent the next two years working at the Co-op while playing cricket in the summer and football in the winter.

The fact that a little lower league club like Pompey even have an academy is remarkable.

Joking aside, I recall they even ditched their reserve side back in the late ‘60s (yet again strapped for cash) thereby losing Mick Mills of England, Ipswich and Southampton fame.

The knocking shops of portsMouth point were better run businesses than that shower of shit at Fratton, FFS.

The closest they come was with Bitterne Park’s Darren Anderton, but England only interested after he spent a couple of years at Spurs
