Can’t believe the Guardian is continuing his campaign of moaning drivel even into the new year. Embrace the opportunity whether you like the decision or not. Over 4 years to get over it, it’s called democracy.

Poor little inconsequential Britain.....

"Britain has retaken fifth place in the rankings of the world’s biggest economies despite suffering one of the deepest recessions in the pandemic.

According to the annual league table produced by a leading British economics consultancy, the UK has leapfrogged India and will accelerate away from France in the decade after Brexit."

Depends what's on the plate, doom and gloom from a certain side as above or we are where we are now and must look on the positive side as we can't go back on the other.

I've changed my way of thinking as was a def remainer at the time of the vote and still think there would have been plusses if we had stayed, but now reality has kicked in and we are out, the real experts (not those on here) seem to be saying we won't be doing too badly so I'd rather go with that

Basically, if those still whinging don't like it, go elsewhere

It will be interesting to see whether any other countries will be following in a few years time having seen how well (or not) we are doing

Grab the opportunity

In the main I still quite like the Guardian, least of all their sport writing is really good. They’ve got a problem now though as even their most enthusiastic remainers will say enough. The opinion columnists are now so lazy and recycling the same pieces such as “Boris’s worst week”, which has appeared half a dozen times or the endless Britain faces ruin which appears every day or two. It’s high time they take a new stance and become a bit more positive.

Doubt anyone else will be following suit. Whatever else this is it’s been a boring, very costly distraction from everything else for the last 4 years. (All this hassle for something that I didn’t think was broken, my main reason for wanting to remain).

But, you are right, we‘ve done it now, and we can all look forward positively. There are undoubtedly advantages to being out and we have avoided the chaos that ‚no deal‘ would have brought, so we just need to make sure now that we make the most of those advantages and, above all, stop talking about whether we did right or did wrong. It really doesn’t matter now and we are never going to rejoin.

It didn't take Priti Patel long to start kicking out the criminal scum we don't want in this country but whom the EU were happy not have on their doorstep.
Opinion seems to have lost sight of the fact that that many hundreds of thousands voted to leave (including me) because we had absolutely no control of who we let in this country, and then when legal attempts were made to remove the same, the so called 'European Court Of Human Rights' blocked us continually.
Most people didn't vote leave because they/we don't like the French or the Germans or that we don't want a business relationship with Europe or that we didn't feel solidarity with Europe.
We just wanted to be able to keep bad people and serious criminals out of this country, but of course allow in anyone who wants to work and contribute. We didn't have that facility, free movement was the one thing that needed change and some form of control - recently there have been calls in within the EU to reinstall border controls , and understandably so.
And up until the 31st, the French navy were still gleefully escorting boatloads of people out of their waters into ours, even when it's reported that we paid them millions not to do this.
'Ah but they're fleeing war and persecution.' The last time I looked there was no war and persecution in France. We just have a much looser benefits system.

I turnt 18 the day after the 1987 general election and took that as a sign regarding voting and politics. My view on politics has been total dis-interest since I didn't even know what Brexit was until it actually was voted on. I was gobsmacked about the result I thought all parties were much of a muchness and voting made no real difference in any form.

So when the result came in it really opened up my eyes , I really didn't think the 'people' had a say in what we did as a country. It was the first time in my life that I realised voting could make a difference.

So when the arguments started and the calls to overturn the vote started I became interested and became more passionate about it not for the good of in or out as I didn't care but for the ideal of the , not me as I didn't vote , people making a difference.

Sometimes I wish I didn't give a shite still as it's been quite a confrontational few years but I am so proud of our country for seeing this few against the odds I would say.

So my reasons for Brexit were actually nothing to do with Brexit , I have since voted once , that was in the Euro MP elections , I still couldn't bring myself to vote for any of them in the general election !

Trust no one in a circus.

Look again at what was written on the bus - “We send the EU £350m a week, let’s fund the NHS instead”. That doesn’t say let’s fund the NHS the entire £350m a week. The problem is people read the comments and opinions from political commentators and ‘experts’ and think what they say is true. When the bus didn’t say whet you think. The big question is what level of care should the NHS provide, for example do we want the best cancer survival rates in the western world or do we want to only be mid table? Once politicians decide this, which having worked in the NHS for over a decade I can assure you they haven’t. Then it’s time to work out how much that’ll cost maybe it’s an extra £200m a week, maybe £500m. The problem now is things simply muddle along and without knowing what the NHS should be actually aiming for.

I said I didn’t think it was ‚broken‘ (and I appreciate that many did). You‘re talking about sovereignty stuff. Most other countries aren’t so fussed about that and recognise the benefits of the EU much more than we do here.

But the main point I was making is that while the electorate here could be conned into thinking that leaving the UK could be achieved at no cost, any ‚remain‘ campaign in another country can now point to the UK as to, at the very least, the enormous hassle and national upheaval involved.

But let’s see, we don’t need to agree on it, we can wait to see what happens.

To be honest 1885, I don’t care what she does. It offends me that someone as stupid as her is Home Secretary. It’s really as simple as that.

And if we’re going to benefit from leaving the EU (which I am all on board for) we are going to need able people involved, not cretins like her.

I think you have acknowledged yourself Ian, and I respect you for doing so being that you voted remain, that having to agree with 27 other countries takes lots of time, lots of meetings and often results in us not being able to do the thing we want to do.

Officials in Bulgaria, Spain etc won't understand all of our needs as much as we don't understand their need for bull fighting. We all have different needs and wishes, so I don't like having to ask 27 other countries what they think! In the same way, Greece probably wouldn't appreciate us telling them what we think about the use of sunbeds or how much we tax ice creams when it's 100 degrees! It doesn't affect us here so we wouldn't know. Our island is much smaller than Spain, France etc so they wouldn't understand our needs. Like another poster said, if our government makes laws we don't agree with, we can vote them out. If the EU makes a law, we can't vote them out or change it. To me, that isn't democratic and it isn't freedom to choose what we want in the UK.

I don't personally understand what is wrong with each individual country being friendly neighbours, but being able to make the laws (based on the electorates' instructions) that suit the needs of each country. We can't all be the same can we, when we live in different countries, different climates, different population sizes etc etc.

You set out the arguments for being independent very clearly and I am not going to argue with you.

The other side of the coin in that 27 independent countries all with different rules have 27x26 inter-country relationships to navigate, and standardisation and common set of rules and regulations avoids a huge amount of cross-border ‚redtape‘ and creates a level playing field sothat a free market in goods, services, capital and labour can operate fairly. It also means that historical differences between those 27 countries become much less relevant.
