Thing with nurses is it’s a broad discipline. Pay ranges from £80k for chief nurses to about £25k for entry level. I’d say the average is around £35k, so it isn’t great but not the pittance the media make out. A lot of nurses I work with do bank and agency on top of their regular shifts and that pushes their salary to I’d guess £40k. I’d look at upping the entry level pay grades, which really are too low. | |

The way to take people out of income tax, is to raise the threshold at which you start to pay.
The coalition govt did this at the insistence of the Lib Dem’s (their finest achievement imo) raising it from £6,500 to £10,000.
Sunak has just frozen it. Which incidentally doesn’t affect the very rich at all because once you earn over £125,000 you’re not entitled to it anyway.

The billions (billions££££££) casually spunked away on failed projects run by Tory party friends compared to what they are prepared to begrudgingly pay to people actually working for a living is unbelievable. (So Bad there must be a case for a Covid ‚windfall‘ tax on the greedy f*ckers who have profited from all this - because the money has gone somewhere).
But for the moment, the turkeys will keep voting for Christmas.

We surely all know the difference between spending on capital and revenue. It’s easier for gov departments to spend on one off contracts than pay increases that will have impacts for decades. As my comment above, it’s a complex issue healthcare pay but the media would have you believe it’s so simple. Another illustration of this complexity, if you significantly raised nurse pay, of band 6 (who is relatively junior) would be earning more than many specialist trainee doctors. | |

Nurses generally do a great job but there are 1.1 million of them.
Think the government are mad not to offer more and no doubt they will. They deserve a pay raise but not with the generosity of some on here. With average pay of around £33k, 12.5% would cost about £5B. | | | |
