Go to assume that there are some pretty clear mutually agreed aviation rules about air space and countries underneath it not taking the piss.
They could start by restricting access to Belarussian aviation to the airspace of EU/NATA countries. Given all the protocols for pilots and air traffic controllers in terms of allowing planes into the air, I would have thought that would be pretty easy to implement. | |

In reality, although it has obviously been weakened by the departure of the UK, the EU has been able to do a lot. Banning Belarusian planes from European skies and airports is a powerful measure. That is the power of an organisation that has 27 member states.

I doubt if they will do anything. We will get the usual round of sanctions etc but basically they have got away with it, just as Putin gets away with assassinating dissidents abroad. | | | |

I agree that closing EU airspace to a Belarus airlines is a pretty big headache for the Belarusians. If they want to fly west, they would need to go north of Finland or as far south as Turkey.

Sorry Dirk, when I say gesture I mean we do things which aren’t strong enough to stop these buys doing exactly what they want to do. As for NATO, I am not sure what they could have done. Wasn’t the pretence for forcing the plane down being that there was a bomb on board? Maybe they could have sent up some interceptors to ward off the fighters and escort the plane to another safer airport but what if there had been a bomb on board and it had gone off? Then what can NATO do after the event? Hijack a Plane from Belarus in retaliation? These guy know we aren’t going to do something really serious back at them. [Post edited 25 May 2021 19:24]
