The Catholic Church says Johnson was free to marry in Westminster Cathedral because, even though he had renounced his mother's Catholicism, and been confirmed as an Anglican while at Eton, he was still a baptised catholic. As none of his previous 2 marriages were conducted by the Catholic Church, they were not recognised. His offspring from these marriages, by that logic, are therefore illegitimate. Wilfred is OK however, as he is a baptised catholic, even though he was born out of wedlock. No wonder people are leaving the churches in droves ( all denominations ). The hypocrisy of organised religion beggars belief.

What would you prefer? A shelf stacker or bus driver as Prime Minister? Just to prove you have no idea about me, I haven’t got an Oxford degree, I never went to public school and I’ve voted Labour more times than Tory. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

You raise an interesting point Bazza. Personally I would prefer someone who had a normal job before than a career politician who is driven by ego. But I really don’t care what job they had so long as the have the skill set to put a decent team together to run the country and have good communicative skills.

You would not like Bill Maher's view on non-Politicians running for office. HBO host Bill Maher on Friday blasted celebrities who seek to run for political office, calling out actors and reality stars including Caitlyn Jenner, Matthew McConaughey, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for having "malignant narcissism." On "Real Time with Bill Maher," Maher was deeply critical of high-profile individuals assuming they have the qualifications to manage a state or the entire country. "Someone must explain why celebrities running for office is a recurring nightmare we cannot seem to shake," he said. "The Rock, Caitlyn Jenner, Matthew McConaughey, Randy Quaid. They all have suggested lately that when it comes to running the country, they have what it takes. And they do: malignant narcissism."

That would not include career politicians, or bankers and certain specialist experts.

Zero deaths, all the vulnerable are vaccinated, yet they want June 21st to be delayed. They want hospitality and other businesses to lose a whole load of money when nobody is at risk (and people are mixing anyway and will continue too over the summer). We know vulnerable people and others are safe, open up Boris and get us get back to football too!

The bloke in charge of the pandemic at ground level is said to be “totally fu cking hopeless”, the PM himself is going to bail at the next election and “go off and have some fun and make money” yet no one seems to care that the most inept PM in living memory along with the most useless cabinet in living memory still have their jobs. Watching the news last night was like watching a Carry On film. What is it I wonder? Do the people of this country care so little that they are happy for the likes of Johnson and Hancock to keep the jobs that they are emenantly not suited for? Or is it that no one is prepared to admit that they were wrong over Johnson after giving him so much misguided support that they turn a blind eye to his incompetence and are prepared to let him bumble along until he rides off into the sunset to gorge himself on shagging having fun and making more money out of us mugs. It is easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled. We've got to suffer Johnson for a bit longer yet, and the summer months are going to be very interesting for him because Covid numbers are rising again because of his latest (India red list) dithering and yet he is going to be under extreme pressure to open up when we get to 19 July.

The Establishment's main concern is that covid is now killing off the younger age groups who provide most of the cheap labour. The older age groups have been mostly double jabbed leading to extended Social Care costs. In an ideal world they would have preferred to have jabbed 16 -40 year olds

I’m hoping that the people who first gave him the benefit of the doubt will now see that he was completely out of his depth and even allowed someone he believed to be incompetent to remain in post. In most jobs he would have been removed by now. He continues to show on a daily basis that he has learned no lessons from what has gone before. The word “dithering” sums him up perfectly. Biden came in for criticism when he first took over from Trump but just look at the way that he has steadied the ship. His handling of Putin was masterful. Not bad for an old’un. God how we could use someone as able as him right now.

"One of the politicians still in favour with Mr Cummings is Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab who stood in for the Prime Minister as he was battling Covid in hospital. Mr Cummings described the meetings Mr Raab chaired in the Prime Minister’s absence as “less pleasant for everybody but much more productive”. Because the Foreign Secretary, he said, “can chair meetings properly instead of telling rambling stories and jokes”. And “unlike the PM who as soon as things get ‘a bit embarrassing’ does the whole ‘let’s take it offline’ shtick before shouting ‘forward to victory’, doing a thumbs-up and pegging it out of the room before anybody can disagree”." The thing about Boris is that all the things Cummings is saying about him come as no surprise. Putting it politely, he's a complete charlie... ...and all ours lives are in his hands!

One of the problems is that Johnson has surrounded himself with Brexit loyalists many of whom are not very strong, so it's difficult to identify cabinet ministers that would be better. However, the only one I think that would be definitely worse than him would be Patel. Johnson is a clown but not a complete moron like her. And I think I would take anyone else as at least being a responsible adult, even if some of them are pretty odious (e.g. Gove, Truss, that culture one who looks like a schoolboy). Outside the cabinet, anyone chairing a select committee is pretty strong and would be better than Johnson. Starmer would be better than Johnson. He is also an adult. Apart from Patel, there may be other MPs who would be worse - some of those crackpot Brexit ones are pretty mad - but there are over 600 to chose, so it shouldn't be difficult to find an alternative.

I’m looking for better alternatives not worse. So all you’ve suggested as an improvement is an unnamed someone chairing a Select committee from the Tories or Starmer. Pretty unimpressive selection. Is that because in your view our politicians are poor or because all Tories upset you and Starmer is the main star outside the government? Starmer’s ratings are weak and he does seem uninspired considering that Boris is politically clumsy. What about Sunak for the Govt. or say John Ashworth who comes over well on health?
