The planet was never going to last forever but the Sun has a few years in it yet and we wouldnt have to worry about future generations if we had taken care of Mother Earth. As it is our children and our children’s children will have to deal with our short sightedness. Human kind have sown the seeds of their own destruction. I agree that BJ is a blustering blowhard with little of substance to say and even less to action.
Look at the above. The UK is responsible for 1% of global emissions. Even if we hit "net zero" (whatever that means), the effect upon the climate crisis is negligible.
China, USA, India and Russia make up over half of the problem. Are they going to make serious inroads into their emissions?
China wants world economic and perhaps military dominance and for that they need cheap power, i.e. coal
USA wants economic power and that means cheap power (and a claim that they need to match China.
India has billions to drag out of poverty and it is the case that a lot of the country has no reliable electricity. They use coal and export it for much needed foreign currency.
Russia is run by a megalomaniac bully who will always act in his own interests and routinely lies to his own people and the world. They have huge coal, oil and gas reserves which are cheap to them and expensive to us.
Only if the rest of the world refuses to deal with the above countries until they make demonstrable steps towards reducing their emissions, will there be action.
Until then politicians in Glasgow can enjoy their jolly, speak nonsense and grab the headlines. | | | |

From what i understand of it - admittedly from wikipedia and some american papers - it was largely around making sure insurers accepted applications despite pre-known conditions.
It also mandated that all citizens - with some very niche exemptions - needed insurance.
And the "free" healthcare only covered around 2.9% of the population (of those living in poverty).
Unless i'm missing something there privately owned healthcare partially underwritten at insurance level for a small percentage of people is about as far from socialism as possible? | | | |

There are pros and cons for this system - but the bigger picture is that the number of people who now have some form of health insurance has risen significantly since 2010, and the number of poor people qualifying for subsidies even more so - which is the definition of socialism.

The most frustrating / annoying thing with health care, is that you can't get to see your own doctor anymore. We pay our taxes, yet they don't answer the phone at my local surgery. A message just says that they have gone phoneless, please go online. You then have to complete a form and they assess whether the doctor will see you online over zoom or face to face. You then get an appointment in a month or two (if you're lucky), by that time many people have got better or it's too late. This wasn't the case before the pandemic. Just another excuse to not see us. You can see a doctor if you ring 111 and say it's an emergency and of course you can go straight to A.and E. In my area, the problem is that they are building houses by the second but the surgery is still the same size it was 30 years ago. And now we all have COVID to pass on, doctors are not to be spoken to. | |

It is strange and very annoying! There is an issue with too many new houses in one area, with the same number of doctors and surgeries, but everywhere is going phone less nowadays, we are forever speaking to machines that give options that don't answer our queries and that's dam annoying too! A sad indication of the current times is the amount of people dying at home..its more than In hospitals sadly....
People are basically to scared too, or unable to get everyday care that could possibly save their lives.
Last year's media coverage made people consciously stay and die at home with their loved ones around them, rather than risk going into hospitals and dying without those dearest to them getting to say their final farewell and last touch embrace or kiss. | |
