England v Fiji RL at Spotland 18:56 - Jul 22 with 5886 viewsjudd

Anyone any idea if this game has been or will be rescheduled?

Anyone bought tickets and asked for a refund?

Hope it does go ahead. It was a great evening when Fiji played Ireland in the World Cup.

No update at all on the Hornets site since this in August 2021:
https://www.hornetsrugbyleague.co.uk/article/927/england-v-fiji-postponed-until-

Following the recent announcement that the Rugby League World Cup would be moved to Autumn 2022, the club has worked tirelessly with partners to ensure Rochdale Hornets would still host international rugby league in the run up to the rescheduled tournament.

An agreement in principle is now in place between Rochdale Hornets, the Rugby Football League and Fiji Rugby League for a fixture to be played at the Crown Oil Arena in the run up to the RLWC in 2022.

A date for the rearranged fixture is yet to be confirmed.

Tickets, hospitality, and sponsorship purchased for this year’s event will be valid for the rearranged fixture and tickets will be issued prior to the event fixture. The event fixture is currently unavailable for purchase but will be made available for sale once a new date is set.

Comparisons of that kind are inevitable when one has a moustache. Being truthful it was more the late 60's when things were in full swing.

The commercial brochure for the game is still available:
https://issuu.com/rochdalehornets/docs/commercial_properties

The ticket FAQ's are here:
https://www.hornetsrugbyleague.co.uk/tickets-new/england-vs-fiji-faqs

Q. If the match is cancelled can I have a refund?

A. Yes, we are offering a 'Money Back Guarantee' on your tickets if the event is cancelled due to the covid 19. Fans can therefore buy with confidence and we look forward to welcoming you to the Crown Oil Arena.

Cancelled due to the covid 19.

That could be interesting.

No chance of the game taking place, crowd restriction is just 900 +apparently enforced by the football club, you couldn't make it up really. Certainly a lot of bar takings, hospitality revenue lost as well as a lot of us wanting to see International rugby. “Just 900+”

Yes, it relates to the lease with Hornets.

Strange that there has been no announcement on this. England are to play a yet to be announced warm up game on October 7th according to a recent press release relating to their yet to confirmed world cup strip.

Dale are at Newport on Oct 8th so stadium likely to be available on 7th.

No idea, I guess if Hornets are organising it then the restrictions will still apply, if not then we can be accursed of a bit of hypocrisy.

Why is it hypocrisy?

Surely it's the Stadium.Compamy owners hosting a rugby league friendly international and so should be entitled to.eirher rent the place out under the terms of the safety certificate, or keep ticket proceeds.

Sorry but I thought it was organised through Hornets. Apologies for that didnt realise it was through the Stadium Company

The England versus Fiji game, as I understand it, was awarded to Spotland in recognition of the town’s relationship with Fiji.
It wasn’t awarded to Hornets as such.
There was plenty of lobbying by the likes of Mike Ratu to get the match staged in Rochdale but it wasn’t anything to do with the regime at Hornets.
The RFL were renting the stadium from the owners.

I thought it was to celebrate 150 years of Rochdale Hornets, a book covering the history not available from their club shop.

I believe it was a deal done with the displaced former CE so wouldn't surprise me if it was on a nod and a wink

I don't think that's right EllDale.

There's no mention I can see of this on our official site.

It must be a big crowd too because "Rochdale Hornets CEO, Steve Kerr said:

“Work can now continue to make the England v Fiji game an incredibly special event for all fans, and I thank the thousands of people who have already purchased tickets, hospitality and sponsorship for their support, patience and understanding."

Fair enough, I stand corrected.
I just remembered a conversation with someone from the RFL at the time who said that Spotland was ideal as far as they were concerned as the game would probably sell out and they wouldn’t lose money.
It was going to be England’s only warmup game before the World Cup.

Funny mentioning the RFL because I can't find any trace of the England vs Fiji game anywhere else other than the Rochdale Hornets website.

This is from the RFL site:
https://www.rugby-league.com/article/60556/england-rugby-league-to-launch-new-pl

England Men will wear the new kit for the first time in their World Cup warm-up match on Friday 7 October, with more details to follow on this event next week.

Probably because Hornets themselves don't know if the game can be played maybe?

Would be very odd if Hornets didn't know when the game is given they have the agreement in principle!

The announcement might be tied to some commercial contract which is why they can't announce it but I'd expect that they would know.

The RFL would have to be involved as the national team comes under their jurisdiction and so any game like this would have to have their approval.
At the time I understood that they would take the net gate receipts after all allowable expenses and Hornets would get commercial revenue from hospitality and merchandising plus recognition of their 150th anniversary.

Plus those thousands who have stumped up already means there's probably a pretty cash pile that can't yet be spent.

Tickets were up to £50 if my old memory serves correctly. Not sure if that is value for money or not.
