I think he's pragmatic in that progressing in tournaments means not losing. It's boring football unfortunately but not losing also means having competent centre halves and not sticking with someone hoping they will suddenly roll back the years.

You're right, he's definitely pragmatic. Isn't he England's most successful manager since 66? We got to the final recently didn't we, which is more than anyone has done since 66. It is boring, but if England piled forward and let in loads and we lose 4 3, people would complain the defence is terrible and we should tighten up. There could be just a little more balance to this style and have a few more flair players to unlock defences. [Post edited 23 Mar 2024 20:35]

Howe would tick a lot of boxes, if you mean they are looking for a non achieving compliant yes man - he would be one of the few who could rival Southgate in this area.
