Chelsea in for Matt O'Riley 13:49 - Aug 4 with 2934 viewsGRIM

Chelsea are looking to snatch Matt O'Riley from Celtic to replace Connor Gallagher.
What chance have we got of getting him = zilch.
We are going to start the season with a bigger but weaker squad than last season.
We need quality not quantity.

That’s what you get when you hesitate, nothing. Also the Fans can see the desperate need for a goalkeeper why can’t the club? Long hard season ahead I fear.

was it ever going to be anything else without oil wells and randy camels

I would have given 25 million that Celtic wanted and have thrown in Charles if we had to.

We spent nearly 40M (FD + THB) on two players that we had last season.
So thats 40M & we're not any stronger.
That is the downside of relying on loan players.
If they are any good you either have to pay a lot of money for them or let them go.
I initially thought this transfer window was a good opportunity to strengthen the side & that has not happened, we've just brought in players from lower leagues or has beens that are surplus to their clubs.

This is by no means a dig at the club now, or then, regardless of who has run SFC over the years or owned the club (be it Private or PLC) but remember years back when it was harped on that we had to move from the Dell in order to compete? Made little difference whatsoever as we are still paupers in the game.

Ready and waiting to mop up those European places......

How do Fulham manage to survive / improve when there maximum capacity is only half of ours.
If they can do it then we should be able to.

Spot on TN - all the way back to Guy Askham and his fabled biscuit tin, if not before that…
Since the sad and untimely death of Markus Liebherr we have had three billionaire owners who seem to have deep pockets and short arms!
First up Kat L - nothing against her as such, simple fact is she didn’t have the same passion for it her dad had in terms of it translating into investment in the team. People leap to her defence and say she presided over the Club’s most successful times in recent seasons - very true, but that was almost entirely due to the legacy of her dad’s investment not spending she committed to.
Billionaire 2, step forward Gao Jisheng - I actually have a degree of sympathy for this one; pots of money held mainly in China. About 10 days after he took over the Chinese government threw a complete curve ball and out of the blue put a block on Chinese billionaires moving money out of the country to invest in overseas projects and even specifically mentioned investing in European football clubs! Where that sympathy evaporated is he should have stood down not struggled on regardless
So, onto Billionaire 3, SR’s lead investor & Chairman, Dragan Solak - yes, he has put some money in but where is the investment needed now we are back in the Prem? My suspicion is he in an ‘asset billionaire’ which means he doesn’t actually have much money to spend as most of it is tied up in his media business interests in Eastern Europe.
So, here we are back in the Prem with hardly a pot to pee in and in desperate need of spending I would say £75m/£80m min on three key players (Ramsdale, O’Riley + another decent PL standard forward) at the least. Plus wages wanted by Ramsdale and O’Riley could possibly be deal breakers….
Can’t see it happening, hope I am wrong….
Tough times ahead 😔

Poll: How will we get on against Leicester City?

Sounds like Liverpool may well be in the mix for O’Riley, and Rodgers is encouraging him to go there.

Time to move on to other targets.

I am getting fed up,Saints identify good players, take a too long to get them and along come bigger clubs who have been alerted by our interest and buy them.

Brenda would never sell to us
Anyway we need a keeper in case it’s gone unnoticed
And I see the invisible striker picked up another knock ffs he must get injured just getting up in the morning

Players like to be in London, easy to change clubs without major disruption to their families. They may have a low capacity, but there is a years long waiting list for season tickets no matter if PL or Championship. Also, they can cream off those who will pay the highest prices, given the shortage of supply. I know a city banker who is thrilled to have two season tickets there, they will never give them up.

I think you have taken an unfair perspective.

Kat L _ Perhaps she didn't have the passion for the club as her Father, but she did have a passion for his legacy, actually the bulk of the team under Ronald Koeman was her spending not her Fathers.

In the summer of 2014 we had an exodus of players we brought in a lot of transfer money, she could easily have kept a big chunk of it and put it in her own bank, but she invested it back into the club.

We lost Lallana, Lambert, Shaw, Lovren & Chambers, half of our outfield team, bringing in about £90 million, we brought in Forster, Tadic, Pelle, Long, Mane & Bertrand plus Alderweireld on loan spending about £80 million.

It was a complete rebuild not a legacy.

Gao - You are right he was blocked from doing what he wanted to, it was the Chinese deciding they were no longer going to invest in sport, not Gao that caused the issue.

You say he should have stood down, in effect he did do, but what he didn't do was sell the club to the first chancer that came along, which could have truly spelt disaster.

For that we should be grateful.

Sport Republic - The issue with them was that they initially thought that Martin Semmens knew what he was doing, they bought Bazunu, Bella Kotchap, Lavia, Aribo,Mara, Larios, Caleta Car, Edozie, spending about £75 million in the process, in the January window they spent around another £60 million.

So i would suggest our issue is not that Dragan doesn't have the cash, but having to stay in financial fair play regulations.

So far this window we have spent around £60 million, that is a fair chunk to start with, they have put bids in this week that have been reported for Carvalho & 'Riley which are over £35 million total.

So I would not quite say we dont have a pot to p*ss in.

History tells us that our best transfer deals are in the £12-15 million bracket, add a bit for inflation now, but when we sign players in that bracket we seem to get good players with ambition, when we got for players over that they seem to fail.

History also tells us that in the Premier League most of the big deals are done in the last few days of the transfer window

I am not convinced that Chelsea are interested. This sounds like agent/club trying to hype the price. I have never seen the guy play, but always sceptical about players who set the Scottish league alight. Seems a lot of money that Celtic want. Part of me say's just walk away and look elsewhere.

Kat Couldnt of "just" taken the Money out - It Makes me laugh when people say these things. Saints wouldnt of got 90mill hard cash. We might have got 20 or 30 that summer with the rest spread over time. Had she not re-invested in the team it would of gone down and devalued her asset. She then sold most of her % to a dodgy Chinese man, who as a result the Premiership changed the fit and proper tests. So lets not make out Kat is a Saint, she has done very nicely out of this club. The rot started with her and hasnt stopped.

Shaw and Chambers where not regulars, both started around 20 games that season.

How do you know Gao didnt sell to the first person that came along?

Sport Republic have taken the club from an established premier league team, to at best a yoyo club. Their permant transfer dealings in the first 4 windows (with the exception of Lavia) have been disastrous for the club

I've said it loads of times. The sellers are in charge of the time a deal takes. Why should a seller rush?
It is frustrating but we can't judge our transfer business til the window shuts. Right now we don't look any stronger than last year, but who knows. Last minute we might get Ramsdale and two or three others and suddenly things look a lot different.
For me a striker is paramount. I just don't see Armstrong and BBD scoring enough goals and if we struggle to score that puts an awful lot of pressure on the defence. But let's see...
