Not Scott, but his brother Liam

Centre half only had his contract terminated at Latics a couple of days ago

Ticks all the boxes in terms of an experienced campaigner at this level.

The only box that matters is the penalty box. If he's half as good at defending that as his brother was in the opposition's box, he'll do

Welcome this deal, given the how shallow we are at centre half at the moment. A deal until the end of the season seems to hit the spot. Although I would be made up if he can’t force his way into the team due to the existing CH’s being injury free, or returning from injury to keep him out.

A neat, quick fix to an immediate problem.... well done Jim. His experience will help Ferguson and Sassy and he gives another option off the bench if we are under pressure defending a lead or a draw,

I'm of the opposite opinion. I'd be made up if he proves to be better than the centre half options we have at the moment, it means the team will be stronger, there's no room for sentiment or emotions if we are serious about getting out of this league. Every time we sign a player it has to be with a view to him being better than what we already have in the building, we're going backwards if we don't strive for that.

Says he is on loan but last line says he's left Oldham by mutual consent. Strange one.

Understand. But it not sentiment to have a player already familiar with club and style to step in should Ferguson get crocked in the near future. Rather than getting one drafted in at short notice

Where does it say he's on loan?

From a latics supporting mate…

He’s been a main stay for last two seasons captain. Always done a job but we have better defenders now plus he’s 35 but does chuck his body on line.

My bad. Maybe it's force of habit to assume each signing is a loan 🤪

Depends who is the best player, if Hogan is the best option in the club then play him every game. I've not been impressed with any of our central defenders for a long time to be honest. Ferguson has now played three games this season and he's done very well but he hasn't been the managers first or even second choice and he sees him in training every day. He deserves to play tomorrow but if Hogan is a improvement then that's great. If we are to return to the EFL within three years then we will have to be constantly looking to improve all areas of the team, not just the centre of defence.

If Ferguson can stay fit he has all the attributes to be a good central defender. I checked his games last season, bar a poor display against Oldham when out of position, he featured in some good wins - York away for example.

McNulty needs to show the confidence in him afforded to Sassi. Hogan can fill the gap as back up and if performances drop, he’s a solid replacement.

Yes, it's Ferguson in the starting eleven if he's doing ok, i'm happy we have a experienced replacement as another option though if needed. I think this will prove to be a good signing, he's been promoted twice out of this league with Stockport and Salford so he knows what's required. He was voted in the National League team of the year in 2021. Most fans identified the need for a experienced central defender during the Summer recruitment, i would have preferred a younger (experienced) long term option but beggers cant be choosers going into October. Anyway let's hope Ferguson goes from strength to strength and makes the shirt his own, it will be interesting to see how McNulty views things, bearing in mind he states that he bases selection on what he sees on the training ground.

Think this is a fantastic signing tbh, and I’m not generally automatically positive. Steady, gives his all, not scared to put his head where it hurts and plenty of know how and experience in a youthful squad. Think Guy Branston and that’s what you get!

Hopefully not as erratic and temperamental as Branston was during his spell at Dale.

Hogan’s made a good start though. Hearing cheers for a defender winning a header and then clearing a ball was a throw back to better times!

The introduction of Henderson and Hogan to the game last Saturday was key to the victory. Their level of experience was visible as soon as they touched the ball and got us through a tricky situation.

It was telling that the Hogan no nonsense getting rid into a safe area of the pitch received a huge cheer!
