Saints' inability to defend crosses 08:14 - Jan 15 with 1495 viewsPatfromPoole

Good article in today's Echo.

This is our season in a nutshell.

Full-backs who can't defend, or stop crosses coming in.

Centre-halves who don't communicate or lead, and don't get the crosses away.

Utterly hapless goalkeeping.

If we don't get a whole new defence and a striker in the next 2 weeks, you can write the season off.

Though I suspect the club already have written it off.

Article is by one George Rees-Julien.
Sounds like a bloke who should be the bridge correspondent for the Eton College in-house magazine.

I was going to suggest he go in a room with a revolver and a bottle of Glenmorangie and give himself an uppercut...then I looked at his profile picture and realised he is not yet of legal drinking age.

"whole new defence in the next two weeks"...come on George. .lighten up..at your age you've got at least another 55 years of this shit to go.

What about just one whole new goal scorer in the next 2 weeks...that wd be nice.

That was me saying "a whole new defence in the next two weeks"; not him.

I thought it was a really good article, cuts to the heart of everything that is wrong with the team.

I previously thought a new striker was what we really needed, but it isn't.

It's a whole new defence, so that we can then play with a solid back 4, and then control more of the game in midfield.

Then the goals will come.

This also deals with the issue of getting rid of 3 of the bad eggs.

Harwood-Bellis, Stephens and Manning.

Getting rid of Flynn Downes would be a bonus.

One thing clear...back 4 an absolute requirement.

Selling Edwards probably a mistake. Need to replace in this window for sure.

Recruiting more than one CB in this window is not happening.

THB and Quarshie are the CB's...Stephens binned for good.

Just about got the FB cover to start binning Manning.

Downes game time can be reduced when Charles back.

Win next 3...game on

Lose to Skates plus one other with keeper errors and conceding from set pieces...put a fork in the whole set up..it's done.

Oh...we do need a goal scorer...4 goals in the last 6 league games...if maintained would mean 13 more in the last 20 games..not quite up to muster methinks.

I'm left wondering whether a back four of Bree, Edwards, Wood and Taylor wouldn't have been more successful in the first half of the season.

all pretty obvious really
our back 3 4 5 is not working and thats down to personnel and formation and tactics

I would have like to have seen of Roeslev played in a back 4 and still would when he's fit again.
He's not a wing back but you don't play best part of 100 games in a decent Brentford side at right back if you're no good

The couple of times I've seen Jelert I've liked him and I think he can play on either side at full back

Wood paired with a certain centre half who's good with the ball at his feet who's left recently would have been interesting to see. Wood physicality and Edwards ability on the ball could have been a good combo, think of it like a lower quality Claus and Svennson M

Problem is making wholesale changes in personnel and formation half way through a season is risky and I don't think Ekhart will do it

Fail we may, sail we must

I haven’t been impressed by what I have seen of Roerslev at all.

I am really hoping we didn’t spend £5 million on him, as I have read somewhere.

You've seen him play more times than I have so you have a better knowledge of his performances than I do

The two games I've seen him play were the derby game when Murphy rang rings around him and Preston when he was poor too, as were the whole team

I'm still of the view, perhaps incorrectly, that a lot of our players are suffering from poor coaching and tactics and sometimes being asked to play roles that they're simply not capable of

Fail we may, sail we must

One of the many reasons we need a centre forward is to help defend set pieces. When the opposition CBs trundle forward we have no one to mark them. We've conceded quite a few goals over the last few years because of this. Our CBs can't mark everyone and the midgets are useless. I think one of the reasons we keep playing 3 CBs is just to get some height in the team.

A back four is the only way
Stephen’s as we know shouldn’t be a part of that at all
Jelert at RB seems a good option
LB is still weak neither Manning or Welly inspire confidence
In the middle it’s THB and/or WOOD and/or Quarshie not sure what the best combo is
Tonda has to start this weekend with a 4 - Will he? I expect not
It needs stability now especially with a new keeper who you hope has some nous about how he wants his defence to set up

Most of our players are hopeless when it comes to winning the ball in the air, which is a result of Sport Republic's 'style over substance' recruitment. They like signing small, skilful players, but have failed miserably to sign the big, strong, physical players you need at the heart of the team. You notice the weakness even more in the middle of the pitch, where our players almost never win any aerial challenge.

I remember Brian Clough saying that one of the first things he required from any new player was that he was good at heading.
