Larios off for a pittance 06:48 - Jan 16 with 1624 viewsPatfromPoole

To a Spanish second division team in a permanent move.

Yet another disastrous signing by Joe Shields.

As they all were apart from Lavia.

Shame he was made of glass and to light weight for the rigours of English football. Other wise he would of been a great signing..............

By my reckoning I would say Shields made 6 signings.

1, Gavin Bazunu- Played a major part in our promotion season of 2023/24 so not a disaster, if he leaves we will lose around £4 million on our initial outlay.

2. Mateuz Lis, signed on a free loaned out for a fee, sold for £750,000 profit.

3. Armel Bella-Kotchap, injury prone bought for £8.5 million, still out on loan, so probably loss £8.5 million

4.Romeo Lavia signed for £10.5 million, sold for £60 million , assuming sell on clause around £40 million profit.

5. Joe Aribo, came in and has given us 2 ok seasons plus a big part of promotion squad, cost £6 million and we will probably recoup half of it, so good value.

6.Sekou Mara I know you wont agree, but he cost us £10 million and played a reasonable bit part in our promotion season and we sold him for a profit.

Although Larios, Caleta Car & Edozie came on deadline day, Shields was effectively on gardening leave by then, although its fair to say Larios & Edozie were lined up by him.

From that perspective Edozie played a big part in our promotion season so for around £7 million he was quite a bargain, his 32 games with go goals and 3 assists being slightly better than Ryan Fraser's contribution from a similar amount of games.

So the statement that all bar Lavia were disastrous signings is far from the truth, 3 of them played big roles in our promotion season, Bazunu, Aribo & Edozie all playing well over 30 games each, Mara a squad player and as we made a profit he could be said to have been a break even signing.

Even Caleta Car when you take into account loan fees probably only saw about a £1.5 million loss in transfer fee , so hardly a disaster.

So of the 9 signings that Shields made, Lavia made a £40 million profit that more than covered the losses made elsewhere.

Another 4 played a part in our promotion season so where not disasters.

Of the last 4, one was sold for a profit without playing a game, so good business as he cost us nothing.

So that leaves Bella-Kotchap, a reasonable season when he arrived, and we have covered his costs since with loan fees and wages paid, so a disappointment rather than a disaster, Caleta Car a £1.5 million loss and Juan Larios.

So that leaves Juan Larios of the only real disaster of Shields 9 signings, injury issues, given that it is injury that has been the problem, it is not Shields fault from that perspective.

We are likely to get a couple of million back on him this month, so not as bad as it could have been, is a £4 million loss a disaster ?

Overall Shields couple of months at the club made the club a lot of money and helped us to promotion, so far better to have had him here for 4 months than not

Nick I admire your constant ability to try and put a positive spin on things. But its out of kilter with reality.

Ultimately we are a football team and not one of those players strengthened our team. Lavia had potential but i would of kept Romeu.

Gavin Bazunu Has been a disaster, his major part in the promotion season was getting injured forcing a change of style. Will leave on a free.

Mateuz Liz Pointless signing was it worth it for in football terms a very small profit.

Armel Bella-Kotchap cost a fortune will leave on a free this summer.

Romeo Lavia The one Success

Airbo reportedly paid 70k a week and will leave on a free this summer.

Mara appalling player did we make a profit? Does that take into account wages/tax/NI/Pension and signing fees and loyalty bonuses?

So really that "lot of money" was primarily made up of one of those signings only

You accuse me of putting on a positive spin, to be honest I just put down the facts of the situation.

Football is about being judged on end results, the end result for Shields was his short time here , produced a big profit and 4 players that played a big part in our promotion season, plus Mara a reasonable squad player off the bench.

Bazunu wasn't a disaster in the promotion season, he played in 41 games of the 46 game regular season, he kept 11 clean sheets, he was the constant in the 22 game unbeaten run.

Of the 41 games he played we won 21 drew 12 and lost only 8, (4 of them early in the season. )

He forced a change of style from Martin, but that was more from the fact that when McCarthy took over we lost 30 of the last 5 games and scored only 6 goals and conceded 8.

If you cannot be gracious enough to give hm credit for that then i would say that if I have a penchant to put a positive spin on Bazunu then you have a constant ability to put a negative spin on Bazunu and that is truly out of kilter with the reality of that season.

It’s a shame after all those great signings we ended up bottom of the league that season, and lost the tv money that comes with playing in the top flight of English football.

It was a great shame, but I would contend that the issues we had, were more about the signings that we made in January of that year rather than those who Shields signed, Orsic £5 million, Bree £1 million, Onuachu £18 million, Sulemana, £22 million an outlay of around £46 million ( plus of course the one success of that January window in Alcaraz)

But these players were signed to keep us in the premiership not get us promoted. As a supporter I want to the side strengthening not turning a profit.

Looks like SR are determined to cut the wage bill.
Larios = Sold.
Edwards = Sold
Downes = on loan
Bazuna = on loan
Is the club in financial trouble or are trying to get enugh I the kitty to bring in some decent reinforcements.

As with both relegations, it was the Managerial appointments that took us down. Not the players.
Which is pretty much the situation again this season. Arguably one of the best squads in the division, with a managerial team unable to mastermind beating the most limited of opposition.

Alfie House said recently that the Club overspent in the summer transfer window, and they made a number of acquisitions in the expectation that Aribo and Edozie would leave.

So the pair of them staying has cost us quite a lot, both in lost transfer fees / loan fees and extra wages.

You have to ask why so many players fail to improve when they join us, it didn't use to be like that.
Larios played for Spains U15,18 and 19.
Hes only 22 so must have been 18 when he joined us.

Even without the injuries that Larios has had he'd have struggled to make it in Championship & definitely not good enough for the Premiership.
If you're as small as he is you have to be exceptional to play at top level.
He was quick & technically good but his size & injuries will always hold him back.

Now add Ryan Fraser to the out list.
He's off to Australia.
A lot more going out than there is coming in.
