Attendances In Europe Last Night 16:40 - Jan 29 with 1159 viewsSaintNick

Liverpool full house at 60,000, Manchester City had 35,000 against Galatasaray, some 17,000 short of capacity.

Arsenal 50k against Kairat Alamady, 10k short of capacity.

Last week Spurs had 52,000 against Dortmund around 8,000 short of capacity, Chelsea 30k against Paros, 10k short of capacity.

Seems that Liverpool & Newcastle aside the rest of the English clubs in the Champions League cant sell their tickets

Man City is an interesting phenomenon. They don't have the support (the glory hunting support) that the other top clubs have, despite them being very successful. People.in London and around the country etc, go for Man U and Liverpool. When you go abroad, it's always Man U and Liverpool,.despite Man City being more successful over the last few years. It must be to do with the history, with the club struggling in the past.

Man City have always proclaimed to be the "Manchester" club as their glory years have only really been over the last 10 - 15 years with the success being "bought" hence only local support over the long term although there was also some success in the 60's. I also think that since the Arabs came in and bought the trophies for them has actually put a lot of tourists off of them as itnwere
United and Liverpool have let's face it nearly always been at the top of the tree (although I can remember them both in the 2nd division (Utd when when we were there in the 70's for one season)
We were in the States a feew years ago and ended up chatting to a local who's first question was (knowing we were English) whether we liked soccer - soon put him right on that - and told him our allegience and his was Liverpool. Never been there, no link, just the name and the Beatles!

I worked in Manchester for a bit so know a fair few mancs, both blue and red, and one thing that doesn't really get talked about much is that City fans really don't like the Champions League.

A large amount of the City fans i knew from Manchester were far more interested in the FA Cup over the Champions League, and a lot of them didn't bother with Champions League games as a result.

Always sort of respected that personally.

Also the stories of United's support being mostly from outside Manchester is b*llocks too, they're incredibly well supported in Manchester, and a lot of locals go.

In fact compare that to Liverpool where i also worked and it's stark how different Liverpool are. Obviously there's scouse support for them, but even the ones i knew up there said Liverpool was a tourist club these days and that fewer and fewer actual scousers go to games (very different from Everton who still have a strong match going local support)

Yeah exactly. Why didn't he see Man City as winning the most trophies over the last few years and choose them? But as in your example, people abroad always "support" either Liverpool or Man U.

In effect, Everton are the Man City of Liverpool?
Didn't City boycott the CL a few years ago for some reaso and every time the anthem was played booed all the way through it and protested in some other way for some reason?
Or was that something to do with the investigations in to their spending etc and could be why the infamous 115 breaches still hasn't been brought to a conclusion?

Everton built a stadium, creating loads of job, regenerating an entire area of the city but their accountant owner messed up the accounts getting Everton an unprecedented punishment from the coonts at the FA, nearly ruining the club and the community.

City were given a stadium and surrounding area due to the commonwealth games, got new owners and have spent ridiculous amounts of money without any regulation despite their 115 charges that will never see a conclusion.

Definitely not the City equivalent.

City fans always boo the Champions League anthem at the start of games; they despise UEFA.

I think Liverpool tend to get more locals in for European games, whereas tourists snap up the tickets for their Prem games.

All I know is it must be bloody expensive to regularly support a really successful team.

It costs a fortune to follow Saints, and we’re shite.

The expanded CL makes all the games up until the knockout phase finally begins utterly irrelevant. They play months of games and still have 24 teams going through to the knockouts so all they are really doing is playing from Aug to Feb just to knock out FC Carrierbag and the a couple of others.

These games are little more than friendlies so I can see why fans can't be bothered to pay the exorbitant ticket prices and just stay at home and watch on TV.

Liverpool fans didnt seem to have these issues

What makes a Liverpool in Slough get off his sofa and make a 500 mile round trip to Anfield before he has even taken is exhorbitantly prices seat, whilst his neighbours who support Chelsea, Arsenal & Spurs cant be bothered making a short trip

City will be opening their ground extension in the next few months bringing capacity up to just shy of 62k.
i can't imagine the club would of approved ground enlargement without doing some sort of investigation into whether the support was there.

I despise most of the top 6. In fact its only City that I can stomach. They seem to be the locals club, but they also still seem to have avoided the arrogance and self importance of Liverpool and United whose fans have always been insufferable.
Maybe that'll happen to City over time but maybe it's from the manager or the type of player they go for but they seem ever so slightly less detestable than the others.

Man U supporters are mostly from outside the Manc area. YouGov are a highly respected market data company and they say that Man U are the team with most supporters living outside the area:

Yes, lots of locals go, but lots of others too. TBF, lots of these are genuine supporters who regularly take massive journeys for home games, which is more than I would do. I once had to wander around the coach park at Old Trafford and it was amazing some of the locations that the coaches were from. I bet lots of these grew up when Man U were the glory team and that's why they support them, but fair play to the ones who still do the travelling.

As you know, their Champions League games have a very high majority of locals watching them, who often don't get the chance to see Prem games, where the tourists take over.

you are right, but aren't they affected by the high ticket prices and the fact that it is a nothing game against carrierbag fc as well, after all the Chelsea, Arsenal & Spurs locals are

I know quite a few people in this area who are Man Utd supporters and seem to share their season ticket with mates to make the cost more affordable.
One of the many abiding memories I have from the 1976 Cup Final win, was seeing the coach brandishing a 'Southampton Man Utd Supporters' banner on its side, broken down on the side of the road with the passengers wandering around outside, having to witness all the euphoric Saints fans taking the piss as they drove triumphantly back to Hampshire.
