Except they have spent millions on lots of 25 million plus established PL players to replace him. Grealish going to Man City is also totally understandable but Ings to Villa? Totally different story behind that. You are trying to pull the wool over people's eyes. They're not stupid. All our top players leaving (to mid table teams) and we are leaving it late to replace them. Where are we going to find a 20 goal a season striker from unless we spend 30 million? We won't spend that because we won't pay the wages, so we are in trouble.

Im not trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes im just pointing out that this happened to us before.

Ings going to Villa shows that the club couldn't stop the transfer, the player had made it quite clear that is where he wanted to go, if a big club was interested then Saints would hold on to try and force the price up.

7 years ago the fans were revolting and slagging the club off, we then had the best 3 seasons in three decades.

It had happened before but we are skint. We don't pay the wages you have to pay nowadays. Will we spend it on replacements on time? Can we replace Ings? I doubt it. Last we heard was that the club was in debt. Will we spend 30 million on a replacement. We all know the answer.

Well yes but Grealish for starters is going to a much bigger team with a much higher quality… well everything, and in my view will be winning that quadruple quite soon! As well as the fact that they’ve spent that money on loads of great replacements as well as investing money into the club to improve it (so the board is doing exactly what fans want/expect)). And also with Ings he’s joining a team that’s going to finish like 13 to 10th (which is barely any different to where we will finish) so is clearly only doing it for the money, and what angers me most is all the lies he came out with saying that it would only be a PROPER top team (aka at the very least a “top 6” team) and has left his boyhood club that’s got him everything as well as making the England squad again

The feeling of betrayal is what hurts the most, but on a brighter note we are not skint we have money to spend again, of course as long as we spend it.

We might not be up there with Villa because we havent sold anyone for £100 million, but we can improve the squad.

The point is, it is now about what happens next, if we reinvest the money then we will be fine, we are linked with players and we have four weeks to get in players before the window shuts.

We should all sit back and get up in arms when the transfer window shuts, give the club a chance to invest the money

We sold someone for £75M and bought a fair amount of unproven shit, although a couple of decent ones.

We will see how Villa do, hopefully Ings gets injured and fails miserably

We shouldn’t have to sell to reinvest. We’ve been a premier league team for a decade or so. We should have a solid revenue coming from a variety of areas. Sure covid has hit us, but where are the reserves from so many bumper tv deals? Where’s the commercial growth that should have happened from being so long in the most watched football league on the world? Instead it’s lil ol’ saints bumbling along. I know you don’t like him, Nick but the only person to challenge this model (and he was far from perfect) was Cortese. He actually saw that saints has massive potential and could be a really viable competitive club. Since he left it’s been a slow burning slide. No saints fan should be in any doubt where we are in the pecking order, we’re scraping around with the newly promoted clubs for £10m punts, while our star striker goes to a mid table team.

Out of the £30 million, knock off Liverpool’s £2 million cut, plus the “loyalty bonus” he will get for not submitting a transfer request.

We’ll barely have enough to buy Guido Carillo all over again.

Nick you have a warped perspective.

Ings wants champions league and goes to villa. Grealish has turned down several moves and is now going for an astronomical fee to currently the most successful club in the uk. Grealish kept his head down while “our” Danny whored himself about.

We have no idea what money the club has got for him, so no idea if it all gets put back in. But as Pat says by the time everyone has their cut, it will be another unproven player

We’ll end up spending £16m or so on Armstrong from Blackburn. He’ll probably score 7 or 8 goals. But at least he’ll be a good prospect when our championship squad finally gets to play in the championship.

Discuss? You mean call them abusive names. I know who you are responding to. Just put him on ignore then you don't have to read his naive, gullible, prejudiced posts. Ings is loyal, nothing like Van Dyche, Ward-Prowse is happy here, Ings doesn't want the money he wants success, he said so blah blah blah. And when Ings goes to Villa, he was wrong again. Oh and he doesn't like Tories. Nearly forgot.

Well….

So far in this window we have lost our best defender and by far our best striker.

And brought in a hopefully decent left-back from France, plus Walcott and two kids from Chelsea.

We’d better have a few rabbits up our sleeve or else we are in the brown stuff.

I am far from happy Pat but Bertrand has been in decline for a couple of years and needed replacing. Compare him to the dynamic KWP on the right well you just can't!! Great servant but I am glad he has gone and if he hadn't gone he should have been replaced in the 1st team anyway. The weakest link in a weak defence..

Villa knew would be selling Grealish for around £100m all Summer.

They have been spending the money all Summer....

Their fans can see that.

We are now scrambling around with 10 days to go until the start of the season trying to replace our best player.

Surely even Nick, with his club supplied blinkers, can see this.

Aston Signed one player back in June for a fee plus Ashley Young on a free transfer, they knew Grealish was going but they didnt start spending the money on Ings till Grealish was up in Manchester having a medical.

How do you know what Saints have got planned, now that ings has been sold perhaps that will trigger the signing of his replacement after all Ings has been gone a full 14 hours now we should have signed his replacement

Have Spurs signed Harry Kane's replacement yet ?

Of course this doesn't fit in with your agenda of disagreeing with anything I say

Let's see that ya'hero Semmens can do then....

Incorrect Nick, so far this window Villa have signed:

Buendia from Norwich for £35m
Baily from Leverkusen for £30m
Ings from us £30m

£95m

Spurs haven't sold Kane yet.....

As I said Villa signed 1 player in June (Buendia)

They signed both Ings and Bailly yesterday after Grealish had had his medical with Manchester City.

So where is what I said incorrect.

Now this really is a point to consider: Villa have spent around £90 mill already this summer on Buendia, Bailey and Ings. Even without Grealish, who has never been a prolific goal scorer, their fans can look forward to them scoring a lot more goals this season.

It's no wonder they can see a way forward.

https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12321904/aston-villa-sign-emiliano

On a positive note, we know we are going to get Adam Armstrong, even if his price has gone up with the exaggerated reports of the amount we got for Ings. Armstrong was a good Championship striker last season. Some of them take the step up in their stride and continue scoring in the Premier League and some don't. We have to hope for the best, at least better than seeing Shane Long come on last night when we were struggling in front of goal. You criticise our fans Nick but surely even you must have been impressed by the way the fans in the Northam greeted Shane Long' and sang his name almost as if Sadio Mane had returned from Liverpool rather than Shane from the Bournemouth subs bench.

If Nathan Tella and Adam Armstrong click, we can see a way forward too. Let's hope they do.

As always you make no sense. Villa spent £95m and they still haven't, yet, sold Grealish. That's the way to conduct business.

The problem is Nick you've painted yourself into a corner and are defiantly refusing to get out.

I've been posting on TUI since the early 2000s when you were on rivals.net. In those days you painted a fair and balanced picture of the club. A lot of fans hated Lowe for whatever he did but you criticised him when fair but also praised him when you could see we were doing the best we could.

After 2 relegations and administration we were in a pretty awful position but were bought by Markus which coincided with an incredible change in fortune which saw us go from rock bottom of L1 to the top 10 of the PL. However, from about the end of the first season after we were taken over by Liebherr you had a personal falling out with Cortese who called you out for saying he wasn't supporting the legendary Pardew enough.

From that day on it was open season against the club. Despite us getting two promotions and ending up in the top half of the PL with one of Europe's best managers you did nothing but criticise the club for everything that it did. Forget all the great transfers we made, you posted editorial after editorial about how bad it was we signed Forren and Mayuka.

But when Cortese left all of this suddenly flipped 180 degrees. Suddenly the club could do no wrong. Every editorial was glowing praise of the club. Nothing was critical. And it's remained that way to this very day.

Why don't you forget about the past and try to be objective again?

It's plain to see the club are not in a good place and haven't been for years now. We've been slipping down the league while failed transfers have left the club's finances in an almost terminal position.

We finished the season with the worst record in the PL for 2021 and now, 10 days before the season, we have a substantially weaker squad than the one we ended last season with.

The things you post on here now are just laughable. If it's not an impassioned defence of absurd decisions the club are making it's ludicrous stuff like imploring us all to buy over priced tat replica kits to help the club's finances.

Why don't you take a plain sheet of paper and write a sensible summary of where the club are now rather than just posting mindless bollux with no semblance of reality to it?

False equivalency, we're moaning and rightly so as the club were blind sided by it and he is leaving to a club on an upward curve which obviously isn't us, compare to 2015? Then its a comparison.

Absolutely. Ings was the last genuine top player we had. Sure JWP is a good player and probably so is Vest. But only Ings from last season’s squad was capable of winning games on his own. The cupboard is now pretty much bare.

Ok Lets compare to 2014/15 summer

Saints have sold

Lambert, Lallana, Lovren, Chambers & Shaw for around £95 million, the spine of the side and with the new season 10 days away have only signed an unknown player called Dusan Tadic for £10 million and another unheard of striker called Graziano Pelle for £8 million.

Neither are fit to lick the boots of Adam Lallana or Sir Rickie Lambert and we are now going to be relegated for sure.

The fans are in uproar claiming that the owner is going to pocket the money, the club has no ambition, we have sold our best players and the people on this message board are telling me I'm in the clubs pocket as im just so grateful that Cortese has gone.

Sound a good comparison ?

So what happened next did we

A. sink without trace as many had so vocally predicted and end the season being relegated

or

B. Bide our time, make some very astute signings and finish a place higher in the Premier League qualifying for Europe in the process.

For the summer of 2015 pretty much repeat the above.

All i have said here is that give the club time to deal with the situation, back in 2014 we didn't sign replacements before we had sold players, we knew we had our targets and we got them.

Too many people moan about what they think is going to happen and dont wait until they see what actually happens.

Back in 2015 & 16 I could keep the moral high ground, some like SF73 have never forgiven me for it and just live to wait for the day when they can say they have been proved right.

I will criticise the club when I need to, but I do so when it needs doing, if we end the transfer window without replacing Ings I will be the first to stand up and say so.

That is one thing I learned back in 2014 is to keep calm and wait to see what happens and not whinge at the first setback, it is always what you do next, never what you have just done.

The second thing I learned is that when you stick your head above the parapet and challenge Cortese on what everyone else is saying on message boards, the internet warriors are then strangely silent
