That just suggests Lavia and Walker-Peters are off

Reading between the lines of what has been said, we are not going to sign a striker. NJ specifically corrected a journalist when they asked about it. NJ said something along the lines of: "I didn't say 'a no. 9' I was talking about options that could make us more potent, which might be in other positions than a no. 9" (not exact quote).

I guess any addition can help us but we do really need a no. 9. It sounds as though the club are resigned to it not happening. I hope that proves to be wrong.

Many coaches from the lower leagues have followed and adopted the systems from their peers in the PL, mainly Guardiola and Klopp.

Both these managers had periods, often 8 to 10 games, where they played the "false 9" type formation. A couple of strikers or link players in the channels feeding midfielders advancing late into the box, making them more difficult to mark.

If you lack a consistent 15 goals a season striker and partner chipping in 10 goals, it makes sense. That type of strike partnership is rare at all levels so you can see the attraction.

Is it the case that NJ is trying that with us? The money needed to buy a strike partnership worth 25 goals a season is perhaps beyond us. The money to buy a forward going midfield player is more within our grasp.

Just a thought.

That - and the fact that strikers who score a lot of goals are always in huge demand in January for struggling PL teams & will command obscene transfer fees and wages.

I would imagine every single PL club from 10th downwards are looking for that illusive goal scoring striker.. as are half the clubs in Europe.

At the end of the day, it's all about who's got the most £££.

Get a holding midfielder and give JWP the role he has now to work along side Che, his goal at Everton was probably the best open play goal we've managed for along time.

Not sure that JWP's goal was the best we've scored for a long time.
The two we got against Man City weren't too shabby.
So good to see us scoring from open play.
We've not been very good at that for a few seasons.

JWP playing a more forward roll makes sense.Hes more likely to win more free kicks closer to goal and we know how well he deals with them.

Yes GRIM both those strikes were great to see hit the net, its the the link up play between Che and JWP that was particularly promising.

I also noticed this in last week’s press conference about Jones saying we didn’t necessarily want a striker.

I thought that was disturbing.

Poll: Would you take going down to League 1 if it meant new owners coming in?

It’s way to early to state we’ve had a good January transfer window and in some ways come May we might have the answers.

We need players to come straight into the starting eleven and improve us . We don’t need players to sit on the bench .

As others have said I’m not certain the club see the way we play as requiring a striker - come the end of January we will find out if that’s the case .

We have 12 days or so to improve the team and then 4 months to win our relegation battle - the club can’t afford to fvck up like they did in the summer .

Having said that I’d take winning a cup and going down without doubt .

Armstrong charging down the keepers kick and scoring is for me the best goal we've scored this year.

It showed commitment, determination and then a cool head.

All things you need in a team no matter how good the players are.

Helped by very poor goalkeeping.
But great to see AA get something for his endless energy & commitment.

It was an open goal though.

Did that really need a cool head?
