From what i understand the police weren't pushing for a bubble in our game, it was the club and fan advisory boards that wanted it.

I was at the meeting before the home game, I can't say that the fan groups were pushing for it, it was made quite clear that this was decided before fan groups were consulted, this was the two clubs and the police. I saw a Newcastle's fans video of the game yesterday, it seemed that it was easier to manage than a game at St Mary's or Fratton due to the fact that TSOL has a metro station quite near. It seemed that this was a focal point for Newcastle fans to gather and then they were joined by special train loads arriving at the station and escorted to the ground. It seemed well policed and in fairness outside the ground there didn't seem to be the intensity for both sets of fans to get stuck into each other. St Mary's nearest train station is Central and that is a good 1.25 miles to the ground right through the City centre, Fratton station is again about 3/4 mile from the ground and right on the road that most of the home fans take from the city centre. Neither ground is logistically ideal for segregating fans coming by rail

| No Bubble For Sunderland / Newcastle Derby on 15:37 - Dec 15 with 259 views | CARDIFFSAINT | I think the logistics of trying to manage hundreds if not thousands of fans arriving at Fratton or Southampton Central stations is the reason why unfortunately this South Coast Derby will remain a bubble trip for the foreseeable, which is a real shame as nothing beats the buzz of arriving at their station, I remember the days of the football special trains to Brighton, great times! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I don't get why people say this about logistics, the last time we played at Fratton it was a night game and they ran a train, it was also probably the least intimidating atmosphere i've ever experienced going there and the police had it totally wrapped up. There is absolutely no logistical issue with letting people go by train, goldsmith avenue is literally a direct road to Fratton from the station and it's easy to police. I actually think it's the other way round that's harder, getting the skates from central to the new away end without them getting ambushed or significant trouble would've been a nightmare. You're options all include going through a park with no cctv, shutting down a shopping district of the city, sending them through the pinch points in st mary's, or getting them over the bridge into the caged off walkway alongside the kingsland

There was trouble before the game back then, when a group of our youth marched up Goldsmith Avenue with a heavy Police presence and a fair bit of disorder with a police horse being punched. The only reason why there was no issues with the train when it arrived was because it was held up outside Fratton Station and Goldsmith Avenue was cleared with all Pompey fans heading into the ground and so around 1,000 Saints fans walked down the road with not a Pompey fan in sight. The problem was the game had already kicked off when we arrived at fratton Station, and most got in the ground with 20-30 mins already played. After the game we were all held in for a long period and again with a wall of police officers surrounding us there was no trouble. The problem with Goldsmith avenue is that it is the one main drag down to the ground and it is hard to police it in the fact that it is hard to walk a large group of away fans down a relatively small road surrounded by police due to the close proximity of the home fans. I do think they are going over the top with this one, back in 2011 they got it right, no leaving for the game 4 hours before kick off, a flotilla of coaches bussed in quickly and easily arriving about 45 mins before kick off and then back on the road 20 mins afterwards.
