Leicester In Crisis, Schmeichel Leaving 14:45 - Aug 2 with 3050 viewsSaintNick

Leicester might have a difficult summer, Kasper Schmeichel is having a medical with Nice and at 35 is being allowed to leave , add to that James Maddison to Newcastle with a £50 m bid on the table and Wesley Fofana, Harvey Barnes and Youri Tielemans all also being linked with a move.

Add to that no signings made so far with only days to go before the season and Leicester fans must be worried.

In goal looks like Danny Ward will be in to replace Schmeichel having been his understudy for the last 4 years.

Leicester have allowed their side to get old Jamie Vardy will be 36 in January

They could certainly struggle this year. I read about them struggling for money, perhaps something to do with the owner losing interest or something like that and not willing to.invest anymore? They haven't invested like they have in the past, they have an aging squad, players leaving so yeah they could really struggle.

If they get £50 million for Maddison, they have £50 million in the bank, but they have to replace three players including Schmeichel & Vardy, so in truth to get players of these 3's quality over the past few years they would need to spend £100 -125 million

How much is Kasper Schmeichel going for, dirk.
He would have been a good buy for us and a great goalkeeping coach to boot....

He's 35 so I guess it would be a free transfer. You know what's going to happen: we'll end up with Alex McCarthy as our goalkeeping coach.

I did note his age but goalkeepers tend to keep their form longer than outfield players.
How old was Shilton when he joined us?

There was a piece on Leicester on Sky Sports Liverpool FC News earlier after a 55 minute interview with Trent, Virgil and Darwin hosted by Carra and Souey
Leicester played 58 games last year.
58, bloody hell.

Shilton was 32 when he joined us and he played top flight football until 42, but he was different.

Kasper's old man Peter played for Manchester United till he was 35 although he did play on a bit after finally calling it a day at 39.

Most keepers last a bit longer than outfield players but still rarely past 35 at the top level

Our expectations are lower because we've come to accept underachievement as the norm. Like most clubs of our size, Leicester had won several major trophies before their current run of success began in 2014. Since then, they've won the Championship, the Premier League and the FA Cup and finished in the top 10 in 6 of the last 7 seasons. They've also had a 9-0 victory.

We have come to accept underachievement as the norm because so many people go on to social media and tell everyone that we are underachieving and accepting it as the norm.

The first thing is to accept where we are in the League structure then you build up a supporter base who have a positive attitude and start to believe we can do things, as long as we have so may negative people telling us all the time that things are s*** and we are underchieving then we will continue to do so.

Even in 2014-17 when we were finishing in the top 8, every summer the same people would come out and tell everyone we had no ambition because we were selling players, when we reached the League cup semi final lots of people were on here telling everyone we didn't stand a chance etc.

Since 2018 we have had two FA Cup semi finals we had 10,000 empty seats in one because everyone was telling everyone else we were s*** and underachieving etc etc.

The first part of the problem is about having a positive attitude and starting to believe in what we can achieve not moaning about what we can't

The problem is that people accept and even praise our underachievement as if we are not worthy of anything better. It reminds me of the Two Ronnies sketch, "I know my place."

A typical club of our size should have won around 4 major trophies by now. Even Little Pompey have won that many. We should at least be trying hard to win our second. Instead we have some fans (fortunately not all) pleased that we reached a semi-final and got knocked out by Leicester and even regarding it as overchievement.

Ok, but from when Koeman left to before this season transfer market opened up, Leicester have had lots of resources and investment to spend, and have managed to keep hold of some of their best players like Vardy, Schmichal, Maddison etc, by paying them the wages they’ve wanted. We on the other hand havent, as we’ve not had the same levels of investment and funding.

And that’s why the likes of them, West Ham and soon to be Newcastle, have done soo much better than us in recent years. But now that we are getting investment in and look like we could be having a NET spend of like £70/80m, we can start to expect and hope for more, and can expect to start progressing up the table and have our chance to actually compete for stuff. It’s just in the last few seasons we’ve not underachieved, if anything we’ve overachieved, as we realistically should’ve gone down and certainly not been on some of the cup runs we have been on.
But like I said before, this seasons different, as we now have finally had some backing so can now expect more.

Man United, like Villarreal and Saints under McMenemy are very good at picking up a top player at the end of his career, often on a free transfer, and getting one or two good seasons out of him. That's because their aim each season is to try to win something rather than just being in the business of trying to sell players for a profit.

Ok but most of those trophies won by all those teams of our size were at least from like 20 to 100 years ago. As these days it’s always the same 6 clubs winning/competing for everything, with Leicester being the only exception to that. As hopefully more teams can start to, meaning that it becomes more competitive, but I think the FA Cup semi finals from last year summed it up perfectly on the fact that you had all the top 3 in there as well as us requiring to have to beat all of the top 3 to win it.
So us getting to that stage is simply what any realistic fan would expect us to do at max, and only the daydreamers would really think that we could have a serious chance at winning it, as unfortunately the gap between us (as well as most other clubs) and the “top 6” is big enough as it is these days, but the gap between us and the “top 2/3” is even larger, and yeah we may be able to beat one, but not all 3. So unless we get a bit of luck with the draws, then it’ll be a while until we can have a chance to win anything

What other clubs of our size did you have in mind? How many of them have had sustained success?

This century, the only clubs outside the “big 6” to have won the PL or one of the two main cups are: Pompey, Wigan, Leicester, Blackburn, Middlesbrough, Birmingham & Swansea. Nearly all of those are now languishing in the lower leagues. Leicester are very much the exception rather than the norm.

Yeah well let’s hope that changes now we do have new owners, or at the very least that if we signed a young promising lad for £10m, then sold him for £50m, we’d next time start with a promising lad who’s worth £20m, so that when we sell them they’ll probably go for more, so like £80m etc.
As if we did do that and actually progressed with the players that we signed then we would increase our squads quality. As yeah there are many players that we couldn’t have ever kept whether we wanted to or not, but there are still quite a few who we certainly could’ve kept, with Ings being a prime example.

Yes, perhaps we just missed the boat. As recently as 2013, there was a Swansea v Bradford City League Cup Final and Wigan beat Man City in the FA Cup Final. If we could have kept our top players for 1 or 2 more years than we did in the 2013-18 period, we might have won something.

Do you actually believe this drivel Nick or do you just feel honour bound to defend the club?

So it's nothing to do poor ownership, an incompetent board and zero investment, our lack of success is all down to the fans not having a positive attitude?
