Can Cyle Larin Delight Southampton Supporters
at 11:03 2 Feb 2026

Tonda said he wanted a smaller squad. We started the window with 4 senior strikers, I expect we'll end it with 3.

Adam Armstrong off to Wolves for £7 million then....
at 10:13 2 Feb 2026

Wolves play with 2 strikers (5-3-2 at the weekend). That will suit Arma just fine. He can't play as a lone striker or centre forward but if he has someone to feed off, like he did with Che Adams, then he'll do fine again in the Championship next year.

This obviously wasn't the plan at the start of the season. No club plans to sell players in January. The plan would have been to wait until the summer and then either get him to sign a new contract or sell him then.

So what's changed? I'm doubtful that it's down to his attitude. There may be some truth in that but it hasn't been a big enough issue to stop Tonda playing him. I think it's just down to the fact that Tonda doesn't rate him as a centre forward and doesn't need him as a right sided forward in a 4-3-3 or whatever. I suspect his priority is to get some physicality in as a back up to Ross, but of course it's unlikely SR will sign anyone who's any good.

New striker - Cyle Larin
at 16:45 1 Feb 2026

You're right Grumpy. He was never worth £18m but he would have been exactly what we needed this season. These jokers sold him for £5.5m so they could sign Damion Downs...

btw he took the best penalty of them all in the AFCON semi final penalty shoot out.

So what do we think about Peretz?

Early evidence is that he's an upgrade (SR got something right??).

He's not as good with his feet but that's not the key thing for a keeper.

I bought some shite as a young kid but the very first 45 I bought with pocket money was a classic that I still love today - This town ain't big enough for both of us by Sparks. This might have been because I had to share it with my brother, so we had to agree which one we bought, as that was the only way we could afford it. I was 12.

Sparks are still going more than half a century later and touring the UK this year (tickets available in B'mouth)

Best tunes from your teenage years

The 70s had far better music than the 80s and actually tube station (78) and shadowplay (79) belong to that decade.

Anyway, all good choices listed above from that era and I'd add Talking Heads.

Southampton Put In Bid For Defender But Is He What They Need
at 13:37 30 Jan 2026

This is part of the problem at SFC - that people would even consider Kieffer Moore and BBD in the same breath because they are both "strikers". WALOB. Kieffer Moore is a centre forward, BBD isn't. Neither are AA, Archer or Downs. The only CF we've had this year has spent most of his life in an A&E ward.

Kieffer Moore is hardly a great player, but he would have added a lot to SFC by bringing options to our play that we don't have when Ross isn't playing.

Attendances In Europe Last Night

Man U supporters are mostly from outside the Manc area. YouGov are a highly respected market data company and they say that Man U are the team with most supporters living outside the area:

https://yougov.com/en-gb/artic

Yes, lots of locals go, but lots of others too. TBF, lots of these are genuine supporters who regularly take massive journeys for home games, which is more than I would do. I once had to wander around the coach park at Old Trafford and it was amazing some of the locations that the coaches were from. I bet lots of these grew up when Man U were the glory team and that's why they support them, but fair play to the ones who still do the travelling.

Incomings
at 12:03 28 Jan 2026

Our squad "with a few additions" would be capable of promotion, yes. Not because we're any good but because the level you need to get into the play off places is pretty poor and from there it's partly down to luck, as we saw 2 years ago.

So, we should be giving it a go, but it looks like we aren't. Without any additions, particularly a centre forward, I can't see us doing anything.

We have more chance of going up now than next season
at 10:53 27 Jan 2026

Totally agree Pat. If we reach the end of the season and we're looking at poor teams like Wrexham and Millwall in the play offs, it will underline what a criminal waste this season has been and what a mess SR have made of it. There is no doubt that a club with our budget should be challenging for the play offs.

One of the biggest ironies is that SR have consistently gambled in the transfer market (on inexperienced, untested, foreign and injured players) when they shouldn't have done. But now, when they really should gamble, it looks like they are going to fold and pass up the opportunity.

Now is absolutely the time when they should be taking a chance on a young striker who can't get in to a top team (like Broja was say) or a veteran goal scorer who can't play 90 mins week in week out. These are gambles that could easily fail but are still worth taking now. Instead they've gambled when they shouldn't have done, on the likes of Downes, and now seem to have lost all ambition.

AA
at 13:04 26 Jan 2026

That's not a meaningful comparison:

- Scoring goals is supposed to be AA's main job. Leo's is creating chances.

- Leo's shots are mostly from outside the box or tight angles. AA's shots are mostly directly in front of the goal so he should score more as a %.

The key thing in this comparison is that Leo looks better 1 on 1 with the keeper. I've seen AA have a number of 1 on 1 chances this season. When he's confident and there's no great pressure he's ok, but when the pressure's on he's likely to panic and snatch it (e.g. v Blackburn). Leo just looks calmer in that situation.

Having said that I wouldn't criticise AA too much for the chances yesterday. He should have scored the first one but his first touch was good and his shot was ok-ish. A top striker would definitely have scored, but at our level (a mid table championship side) AA is what you get. Leo is a class above us and will probably move on soon.

Burnley Chasing Southampton Defender
at 11:48 23 Jan 2026

It hurts to say it but he's too good for SFC. Mediocre Championship players is our level now and he's better than that. His problem is that he knows it too, so his head hasn't been quite where it should be and I think that's affected him.

There's no point trying to keep him if he wants to go, it would only make matters worse. So he'll go and be replaced by someone who might be ok in 10 years time but is pretty sh1t now.

I think THB will go on to good things if he finds a good club, which might not be Burnley. They'll be back in the Championship next year, so he might decide against a move, but I can see him moving now and then again in the summer to a good PL side.

Much better tonight
at 12:23 22 Jan 2026

It was much better, mainly because:

- We played like we meant it for once and showed some character
- We had a centre forward

But, as a long suffering Saints fan I have to wonder:

- How much can we rely on Ross? We looked good early in the season when he got fit (remember the away fixture v Sheff U?). It was his injury that led to the severe decline in form. Now he can only play for 60 mins, will that be enough? We still desperately need to sign a centre forward.

- How many games will the players bring full commitment to? It should be like that every game but we've seen before that this lot can be part timers when it comes to mentality.

As others have said, it wasn't perfect and we were a bit flaky, but it was definitely a step forward and encouraging for Sunday. Let's hope for the best.

Alfie House on TE's press conference...
at 13:51 20 Jan 2026

"he's spot on about whatever is missing needing to come from within, some real "desire" to win..."

Yes, but how many times do we have to hear the same story? How many times will the players have "honest conversations" and then put the effort in for a few games, before reverting back to old habits again?

Mind you, if they are going to show up now and then, this week isn't a bad time to do it.

7 Managers since 2022
at 14:07 19 Jan 2026

Exactly right dirk. People on this site confuse having some good players with having a good squad.

A good squad is a good blend, like:

Youth and experience (we don't have enough experience)
Height and pace (we don't have enough height)
Physicality and skill (we don't have enough physicality)

You could have a squad made up of the 25 best tricky wingers in the world and it probably wouldn't win a game in the Championship.

Plus, there are some things which our recruitment team clearly don't think about at all, like mentality and grit. The mentality of many of our players absolutely stinks. They can turn it on when things are going their way, but when they have to dig in and fight they go AWOL.

The bottom line: this squad isn't good enough and any manager would struggle.

Where does the blame lie?
at 10:29 18 Jan 2026

It's not true to say that Ankersen isn't involved. As Solak told Alfie House in the summer, Ankersen is his personal advisor on football matters. When they were making the Tonda appointment, Ankersen was directly involved. The core group, including Ankersen, all attended the away game at QPR and they decided their plan in the days around that. Not saying that he is the only one making decisions, but he is definitely still involved. As Solak's personal advisor, he's not going to be completely ignored.

I think SR, Spors, the managers, the captain and the players all share the blame. As has been said elsewhere the whole culture seems wrong. Low standards are accepted. Ultimately that's down to SR, but the players set their own culture and many of them don't seem professional, committed or even seem to care enough. Throughout the season there have been too many times where they don't really seem up for it. Yesterday I would say Hull wanted it more.

Saints' inability to defend crosses
at 22:19 15 Jan 2026

One of the many reasons we need a centre forward is to help defend set pieces. When the opposition CBs trundle forward we have no one to mark them. We've conceded quite a few goals over the last few years because of this. Our CBs can't mark everyone and the midgets are useless. I think one of the reasons we keep playing 3 CBs is just to get some height in the team.

Edwards
at 15:38 9 Jan 2026

Tall Paul was not a great player but, with the little service he got, he showed he was clearly better than both Archer and AA who were nowhere near the level of the Prem. So we sold Tall Paul and kept Archer and AA. Go figure as the Yanks say.

Edwards may succeed at QPR if they give him some confidence, but he didn't look like a good buy to me. Too lightweight to succeed as a CB and probably doesn't have the legs to be a midfielder. If he was going to succeed in any position it was on the right of a back 3. It's the right thing to move him on. In this case I won't be criticising SR.

Centre forward.
at 13:49 11 Dec 2025

Yes we still need a centre forward. TE has done a great job with AA but he's achieved that by not playing him as a centre forward. He plays more like a false nine dropping into space in midfield. That's great but it won't always work. It didn't work against Millwall because they blocked off the passes into him in those positions.

There will be games (and times in games) when we need different options - someone who can hold the ball up with a CB on his back and someone who can win headers in a crowded box. The more teams suss us out, the more we will need this option.

Pep made it popular to play with a false nine, but he knows he needs the traditional qualities of a centre forward too. Same reason Barca play Lewandowski and same reason we still need a CF too.
