Mel Nurse's Promo

"I love the club, my football and the city. I realise the financial situation the club is in and the current footballing position, but my heart was always going to govern my decision. "The people who know me well realise how strongly I feel for Swansea, and, when I say I will do everything in my power to help the club, I mean it. There's no money involved on either part. I just believe I may be able to help in some capacity. "The board felt they were short of footballing knowledge, apart from John Hollins obviously. Perhaps that's where my past experiences will come in." Mel made 257 Football League appearances for Swansea in two spells from 1955-62 and 1968-71. He left Vetch Field in 1962 in a £25,000 transfer to Middlesbrough before returning in 1968 for a small fee from Swindon. He eventually retired in 1971 to concentrate on his business. Nurse was also a member of the consortium dubbed the 'Famous Five' which went to the High Court in 1985 and won a successful stay of execution for the club against a winding up order. But the 63-year-old eventually lost out to Sharpe and Glyn Hammond whose rescue package was accepted by the creditors and eventually satisfied the High Court to keep the club alive.
