Have your Say On Salary Capping

Home > Story Index >Football Fans Census Requires Your Help

Yet again we have been contacted by the Football Fan's census to help them with their latest survey - this time on Salary capping within Football. We have previously helped them on their subject matter and with clubs facing financial ruin, we know better than anyone what effect that can have.
I'll pass to Alex Burmaster, Director of Development at the Football Fans Census to explain "The Football Fans Census has launched the second phase of its survey to gauge opinions of Swansea Supporters on the subject of salary capping for players. This phase asks fans how they think capping should actually be implemented.
  • What should be the limit on player's wages in each division?

  • Should the Cap be set as a percentage of a club's turnover or a fixed amount for all teams?

  • If so, what should these figures be?

  • Should it be set for the squad as a whole or on individual players?

The G14 group, which includes 18 of Europe 's top clubs, agreed in November to cap spiralling salary costs at 70% of a club's turnover. The same month also saw FL clubs overwhelmingly give their backing to proposals aiming for a squad based salary cap in Divisions 1-3. The FL is hoping the proposals come into force as early as next season - preventing clubs spending more than 60% of turnover on players' wages, with the figure later falling to 50%.

The results of all FFC surveys are sent directly to many of the game's leading decision-makers and influencers including the Minister for Sport, the Football Association, the Premier and Football Leagues and the Independent Football Commission.

Voting on the issue will also help to push Swansea up the Fan League Tables.
