Lets Hear It: "We Are Top Of The League!"

Swansea City 3 Boston 0

After two games and eight goals, a crowd of over 9000 people gathered at the Vetch expecting to see more of the same from this side whose performances at present are unrecognisable after the last two seasons at the wrong end of the third division.

There were changes again. Stuart Jones came in at centre back with Lenny Johnrose switching to the left of midfield with Kevin Nugent preferred to James Thomas in attack after his recent good appearances as a substitute. The Swans therefore lined up as follows

Murphy

Jenkins Jones O'Leary Hylton

Maylett Britton Martinez Johnrose

Trundle Nugent

The Jacks started brightly and looked as if they had another goal feast in them. Brad Maylett was as dangerous down the right as he was in the previous home game whilst Britton darted about on his usual runs whilst Martinez held his position in the middle to the usual great effect. More positively was the defence which looked much stronger in the first half and Stuart Jones in particular was dealing with everything that was being thrown at him.

In truth, the first half was a pretty stale game with Swansea having by far the best of the game without really creating a clear cut opportunity. Trundle, Britton, Maylett and Nugent all went close but shots on target were at a premium. We were also dealt a blow when Martinez went down under a heavy challenge and after lengthy treatment was deemed unfit to continue - Andy Robinson coming on as his replacement. Boston were physical and two more bookings for late challenges followed.

One point that has to be mentioned from the first half was an incident when the Boston keeper was about to kick from in front of the North Bank. Time wasting appeared to be the call and the referee was set to show the yellow card but he was handed a missile by the keeper that had been thrown at him from the North Bank. It seems that good support comes at a price to the club and with suspended fines hanging over us I just hope that anyone who saw the incident closer managed to point out the idiot that threw the missile and I hope that that person never sees the inside of the Vetch Field again. Supporters like that we can clearly do without.

The second half saw Swansea really spark into action and it was man of the moment Lee Trundle who opened the scoring five minutes into the second half. Receiving the ball around five yards outside the Boston area he moved to the side and struck a curling shot over the keeper and into the back of the net. The Vetch erupted at another Daps special and Trundle's joy was clear for anyone in the ground to see. This opened the game up and from Swansea's point of view it opened the floodgates. Five minutes later it was 2-0 as Nugent struck a header onto the bar but was alert enough to reach the rebound and head the second goal and the three points were as good as won.

A word of note here was two saves from Brian Murphy after each of Swansea's first two goals. Both times he was faced with very challenging situations and both times made excellent saves to deny the opponents and keep Swansea in the lead. Although there have been some comments about his positioning and ability - these two showed that he is up to the job in hand and it was pleasing to see him make these saves. With a goalmouth scramble to boot when it looked for all the world as if Boston would pull one back, the defence scrambled the ball away and 2 goals remained the margin.

At the other end Swansea were on fire at this point. Trundle was having the time of his life and every time he touched the ball you could almost feel the anticipation that something was going to happen. Not since Lua Lua three years ago has there been a player at the Vetch that you get that feeling about but Trundle at the moment is that and if Alan Curtis pre-game on Real Radio was right, we haven't even seen the best of him yet. There was an article in the paper today that Teddy Sheringham was the best value transfer this summer in the Premiership. If that is true then Lee Trundle must take that accolade from the Nationwide League.

Setting up chances for others, most notably Leon Britton who would have broken his duck bar a good save from the Boston keeper, and chipping from just inside the Boston half were some of the Trundle tricks and Swansea were impressing.

Yes there were gaps at the back but this time we held firm mainly through resolute defending but on a couple of occasions poor finishing. The icing on the cake came five minutes from the end when Trundle combined with Robinson to send the latter through and he calmly lifted the ball over the advancing keeper to take the score to 3-0 Swansea.

A series of corners followed in the last few minutes but Swansea were unable to make it four games in a row with four goals but 3-0 sounds a better scoreline and although it is early days, does our goal difference the power of good. But at this rate goal difference won't be a factor as we will win the league by some margin! (brave words after three games but this side is going nowehere other than the second division at the moment)

Songs of "We are top of the league" rang out around the Vetch and it was true, the Swans are top of the league although we could be displaced tomorrow but again on this performance we will hear that song again before the season is out. Oxford on Monday will prove a sterner test for us but on this form we are more than capable of winning that as well.

Man of the Match? The sponsors (I think) went for Lee Trundle and it was hard not to notice what he did in tonight's game but personally I will go for Brian Murphy. His saves just after the first and second goal were so important to us and for that reason alone he deserves it in my eyes. Add to that the option he does give us with his excellent distribution and it's easy to see why the Republic of Ireland rate him so highly. Well played Brian.

Downsides? The missile and Robbie's are the only ones that I can pick off the top of my head and I honestly cannot remember a match report that I have written that can come up with nothing on the playing side. Brian Flynn has us playing the kind of football we dreamed of and how great it is to watch.

More of the same on Monday please - I can't wait
