Nugent: We're Getting Better

Assistant manager Kevin Nugent was full of joy after watching the Swans breeze past Newport into the 2nd Round of the FA Cup on Saturday. The Swans were always in control of the game and after coasting into a three goal interval lead there was only ever one winner, something which Nugent thinks is just another step up of recent form

"We've had an up and down start to the season," said Nugent after the 3-1 win.

"I certainly wouldn't say we've turned any corners but we are gradually picking up.

"There is a fantastic team spirit in the group now. The difficult start to the season has probably gelled the players together."

Nugent himself claimed earlier in the season that, at home matches in particular, he felt the fans were too quick to get on the back of the players and comments from within the camp have always suggested that they do not view things as bad as maybe the supporters do.

Nugent did back up Kenny Jackett's earlier claim that missiles had also been aimed at them. He said: "There were young ball boys in the way as well so we got them into the dugout.

"It wasn't like a riot or anything, but it's certainly not something you want to see every week. It's something that needs to be taken out of football.

"Someone as to be a stop to it, but it's only a few mindless idiots who are doing it. The majority of people were fine.">

On the opposition side, the News of the World Chump Of The Day Peter Beadle went all John Hollins when he told the BBC "We won the second half 1-0. That's what we asked from them. With a little bit more luck, we could have got another goal and that would have been a bit more testing for Swansea.

"I'm proud of every one of my players."

Meanwhile a FAW spokesman confirmed that they will investigate the incident which left Alan Sheffield out cold after being hit by a coin but only after they receive the referee's report of the match. A statement issued by Gwent Police said "A small minority of supporters attended the game with the sole intent of causing trouble.

"During the game an object was thrown from the stand and hit the fourth official who was knocked unconscious and taken to hospital."

A police spokeswoman added: "No-one will say anything more until Monday."
