Ex whites defender Greenhoff passes away aged 60

Brian Greenhoff has passed away aged 60. The former Leeds defender joined us from hated rivals Manchester United for £350,000 in 1979 and made 78 appearances for us, scoring once.

The Barnsley-born defender was the younger brother of Jimmy Greenhoff, who started his career with Leeds but ended up at Old Trafford with his younger sibling via Birmingham and Stoke.

As part of a cost cutting cull following Leeds relegation in 1982, Brian moved overseas playing in South Africa and Hong Kong before becoming player-coach at Rochdale in 1983 under the command of his elder brother Jimmy.

He left Dale in 1984 following Jimmy's sacking, but still lived in the area and died suddenly this morning. A statement released by his family said: "We regret to inform of Brian's passing this morning, Wednesday 22nd May at the age of 60 years old.

" Brian was a proud and much loved brother, husband of Maureen, father of Paul, Brian and Peter, grandfather to Jack, James and Harry and will be sorely missed by his family, who he made very proud in his distinguished life and career."

Obviously we express our deepest sympathy and condolences to his loved ones at their sudden and tragic loss.

RIP Brian.
