Southampton V Yeovil Head To Head
Friday, 24th Jan 2014 10:58

Perhaps one of the easiest head to head's I have had to write as the competitive history between the two clubs is very recent and short.

Saints first came across Yeovil in August 2006, ironically the first cup game after Michael Wilde had taken over at the Club given the circumstances that surround this one.

With expectations high a great crowd of 20, 653 including a big turnout from the West Country were in attendance, amazingly two of our team from that game 7 1/2 years ago are likely to feature tomorrow, Kelvin Davis in goal and Adam Lallana who was making his debut for the club.

A Chris Cohen own goal put us ahead although Yeovil equalised on the half hour, the lead lasted two minutes before Rudi Skacel hit a blockbuster and from then on it was only going to go one way, Bradley Wright Phillips, Nathan Dyer and Kenwyne Jones adding to the scoreline before a last minute goal by the visitors ended the scoring at 5-2.

Our next meeting came in September 2009, we were struggling to get going in League 1 and had yet to win a game when Yeovil arrived at St Mary's, two Rickie Lambert penalties sent most of a 19k crowd home happy, Lallana and Davis were again present and joined by Morgan Schneiderlin as the only players from back then still at the club.

April 2010 saw perhaps the most exciting of our meetings, 7,484 were at the game including around 3,000 Saints supporters as the club chased the last hopes of overcoming the ten point deduction and forcing our way into the play offs, with the game at 0-0 that hope appeared to have gone when Morgan Schneiderlin was sent of with 2o minutes to go, but then in the dying seconds, Papa Waigo crossed and Lee Barnard headed home to sent Saints fans behind that goal wild, ultimately we wouldnt hit the top six, but it was one of those away games to remember.

Fast forward five months to the next season and 5,854 turned up for that seasons game played on a midweek evening, a poor crowd given that Saints still brought the full allocation to Huish Park.

Guly put us ahead early in the second half but the lead lasted barely 10 minutes before Yeovil equalised from the spot and Nigel Adkins having been boss for barely a fortnight couldnt make it the second win of his reign.

Our last meeting came in March 2011 as we continued to chase Brighton and Huddersfield hard for what had looked like a nailed on top two finish for both of them at one stage. Ironically this was the lowest home crowd of the three visits they have so far made to St Mary's, however being a midweek game this was understandable with so few away fans present, Lee Barnard gave us the lead on 15 minutes, doubled it on 55 and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain finished off the scoring to bring Saints within spitting distance of the top two with games in hand.

The most remarkable fact though of Saints head to head with Yeovil is that Kelvin Davis has played every minute of it, not many players who can say that in a history of matches between two clubs, Adam Lallana has played in every game although he was substitute in that evening match at Huish Park so has started 4 and sub in 1.

So overall we have a great record against them, in the League we have won 3 and drawn 1 and in the cup its 100%, lets hope that record is still the same percentage come 5pm on Saturday.
