England bow is a delight for defender - and Pompey
England bow is a delight for defender - and Pompey

Jack Whatmough’s England debut might have ended in a 2-1 defeat to Croatia at St George's Park but it drew praise from the teenager's Pompey academy chief.

The Gosport defender played the full 90 minutes of the under-18 clash and in the second half he was the width of the crossbar away from a goal.

Pompey Academy manager Awford told The News: ‘I was really pleased with Jack’s overall performance. He didn’t look out of place.

‘He probably is not used to having so much time on the ball — as they drop off in international football, so it’s about making that right choice at the right time. Hopefully there are many more caps to come.’

Is the state of Pompey's pitch a cause for concern - and a fair excuse for some of the team's home performances this season?
