Gardos Reported As Having Medical At Saints Today
Monday, 11th Aug 2014 16:53

Steau Bucharest central defender Florin Gardos is having a medical today with Saints according to Sky Sports news.

Gardos who stands at 6ft 4 1/2 according to the stats available on him seems about to join Saints from the Romanian club who of course we all remember from knocking us out in the then Uefa Cup back in 2003, Gardos would have been only around 14 back then and joined Steau in 2010 and has played amost 100 games for the club since mainly in a central defensive role but he can also operate as a holding midfielder.

He won his first cap for Romania in 2011 and has since won 12 caps for his country.

Gardos seems a strange choice for Saints who have been linked with several other more high profile central defenders of late and it could be that he will not be the only centre half to arrive in the next few weeks to give extra competition in an area where we have been week for several seasons now if he passes his medical its believed Saints will pay around £4.8 million for his services

Only stumbling block seems to be whether he is carrying an injury or not with some Romanian sources quoting that he picked up a muscle tear in pre season and Steau did not diagnose it correctly and he needs a few weeks rest before being fully fit.

Guess what ... Liverpool were after this guy, along with Inter and Roma. Apparently he is really huge, with a great reputation inside Romania. Apparently didn't put a foot wrong against Messi's Argentina in a friendly, so hope he's fit

Glad to hear this news...but hope he is more a Lovren type buy (without the attitude) than a Forren purchase. Seems to have the right profile and balance of youth and experience.

I don't imagine this guy was high on Koeman's list of preferred candidates, but more likely nominated by Reed's researchers. After all Adkins knew nothing of Forren and probably Pochettinno knew little about Lovren. Given Reed's chequered history in foreign recruitment there is no telling whether he is good enough, but not overpaying for Rojos seems a sensible policy.

It seems as though everyone is overpaying in this transfer window. If you want a player and a club has no reason to sell, then you pay what you feel that player will be worth to your club, regardless of the going rate. I fear we are missing out on our top targets by being too conservative. Whilst we absolutely don't want to be ripped off, with money in the bank we must be prepared to pay a premium for our top targets. I would hardly call 6 million for a relative unknown a sensible fee. It's a gamble for sure.

Haven't you guys seen the videos of this player in action? He appears to be brilliant and just what Saints need in central midfield. Excellent choice from the scouting team. Who is Lovren by the way?
