Saints Oops I Mean England Beat The Scots
Tuesday, 18th Nov 2014 22:49

A weakened Saints side defeated a Scotland side managed by ex Saints manager Gordon Strachan in Glasgow tonight.

It was very much All Saints evening in Glasgow tonight as current St Mary's season ticket holder Roy Hodgson's England side beat Wee Gordon Strachan's XI 3-1.

Two current Saints players in Fraser Forster & Nathaniel Clyne started the game augmented by ex Saint Alex Oxlade Chamberlain & Luke Shaw and in the second half there would be another two of our former players in Lambert & Lallana to make it six involved on the night and it could have been eight if Theo Walcott And Calum Chambers had been given a run from the bench.

But perhaps the most significant fact was that six of those players have played for the club within the last six months or so.

This meant that of the 22 England players on duty over a third have played for Saints, an incredible testament not just to our youth policy but our ability to spot a player's potential given that only Fraser Forster of the seven was signed for a significant fee for the club.

England's pressing was impressive, Woy spent his time well camped at St Mary's last season.

A great Saints inspired win, a day of mourning has just been announced north of the border and on portsea island.

Clyne transferred his good form for Saints into an England shirt to cement his place as Roy's first choice right back. Forster in truth didn't have much to do and was exposed badly for their goal by Sterlings woeful attempt at defending. Even Lallana looked like he had his best game since his transfer, which must be down to playing with his ex Saint colleagues again!

From this morning's Grauniad:

Nathaniel Clyne

The Southampton right-back is a key member of the Premier League’s best defence and he showed why in an accomplished debut for England against Slovenia – Clyne carried out his defensive duties diligently and showed good adventure going forward. He is likely to be buzzing when Southampton visit Aston Villa on Monday night.

I was thinking e aptly the same as I watched Nick. I wonder if any of the ex Saints would like a move back.

And if fit JRod might have been in the squad, too, though JWP probably would still be knocking at the door. But give him time.
