Another super strike by Jed Wallace and a header by Ryan Taylor earned Pompey their fifth home win in two months as Plymouth's pilgrimage to Fratton ended in defeat.

After a fairly lifeless first half, Wallace brought the 16,000-plus crowd to life with a lovely finish with his left foot after cutting in from the right just a minute into the second period.

Pompey doubled their lead on 76 minutes when in-form Taylor headed in Dan Butler's perfect long cross from the left.

Plymouth quickly pulled one back through Olly Lee to set up a nervous final 10 minutes or so but, unlike at Carlisle on Good Friday, they held on for the three points.

Boss Andy Awford told the Pompey website: I thought we deserved the victory, although we could have done better with the ball before the break. When you play with three behind Taylor there has to be more movement and I wanted Jed to be more than a left winger.

'So we spoke about a few things at half-time and thankfully they took that on board and were a lot better. We were excellent in the second half, even if we didn’t make it easy for ourselves by conceding straight after we went two up.'
