Saints V Liverpool The Preview
Saturday, 19th Mar 2016 13:26

Ronald Koeman has a bit of thinking to do before he selects his side to take on Liverpool in a game Saints must win if they are to keep up their hopes of a top six finish.

Ronald Koeman is getting near his full squad with Charlie Austin and Jay Rodriguez scheduled to be fit enough for first team contention after the International break.

But he has to do some thinking for the Liverpool game with Jose Fonte and Victor Wanyama both back from suspension to take o the Merseyside team.

Presumably it will be a no brainer to put Fonte back into the back four in place of Martina, but then Koeman has to consider whether he should also put Wanyama straight back in, although that is far from a dead cert in that the Kenyan has been out for so long and in his place those who have deputised particularly Oriol Romeu and Jordy Clasie have shown their class.

What Saints do have to do though is cut out the lapses in concentration that have creeped back into their game over the past month, virtually every goal scored in the four games played in that period could have and should have been prevented and this will be the key on Sunday, if Saints keep it tight then they can win the game.

On paper it could be a cracker, Liverpool are devastating on the counter attack, but defending they are often woeful and always look like they have a mistake in them and again we have to capitalise on this by not allowing them time to make their breaks count and by harassing them into errors at the back.

Liverpool are not the most consistent of teams and Saints should be well capable of beating them if they cut out mistakes and take their chances.

The question is though is what Liverpool team will turn up, they seem to be a big game team these days, capable of winning against the big clubs but struggling in games where the adrenalin is not automatically pumping and as Saints showed at Anfield back in October and Sunderland showed a few weeks back, a game against Liverpool these days is never over till the final whistle is blown.

In the past Saints have had some classic games against Liverpool both at the Dell and at St Mary's, the past three meetings at home including our debacles in the Capital One Cup earlier this season have seen the Merseysiders triumph, it is time for another Saints stormer and all three points staying on Itchenside
