£11 Million For Shane Long You Are Having A Laugh Liverpool And Leicester
Wednesday, 25th May 2016 12:35

Liverpool and Leicester City are reported as being about to lock horns as they battle to sign Saints player of the season Shane Long, but are they having a laugh !

Ironically when Shane Long joined Saints from Hull City two years ago many Saints supporters were expressing exactly the same view £12 million for Shane Long, you are having a laugh !

I was not one of them, at the time I pointed out that the going rate for a striker who would get you around 10 goals in the Premier League would cost you that amount, after all Lukaku who had scored 15 goals in the previous season had gone to Everton for £28 million.

We soon found out though that Long's game was about more than just his strike rate, he brought something else to the squad, a work rate that was second to none and an ability to close down defenders and create openings for others.

Often though that would initially go unoticed by some Saints fans, what Long did was not just about delivering the ball for an assist, but in winning the ball or pressurising the opposition that would lead to a goal 3 or 4 passes up the line.

Ironically perhaps Long's finest game for the club is one that is remembered most for Sadio Mane scoring the fastest ever Premier League hat trick against Aston Villa in 2014/15, Mane took all the plaudits but it was Long at the heart of the moves that created the goals for the Senegalese striker, including one where Long tackled the keeper to leave the ball set up for Mane.

People also forget he scored twice in that game as well including the goal of the game from 40 yards out.

So when it is rumoured in the press that Liverpool or Leicester are about to make a £11 million bid for Long's services, either the reports are total tosh or the hack who has written it has not done his homework.

In short if Shane Long was worth £12 million two years ago before he had really came into his own, then his value has certainly not dropped in that period, one that he is in the form of his life.

So the Reds and the Foxes need to have a rethink if they want to prise Shane Long from St Mary's, with two years on his contract Saints are under no pressure to sell, after his form last season it will take a bid approaching £20 million to make Saints sit up and listen to offers.

Every player has his price, but Shane Long's to Southampton Football Club is not a paltry £11 million, less than what we paid.

Makes me sick/angry when I read this kind of thing. If Shane's half a decent fella, which he seems to be, then he'd appreicate that Saints effectively saved his career and took him to a level he's probably never been at before. I can't see the club being tempted by paltry offers from Leicester or Liverpool myself, but I'd rather it was the player himself who told them to do one! Okay, maybe not in those words..

It's high time Saints started stirring unrest by making silly bids for people
Iike Vardy and Sterling, they must be worth a shot at £10m each.

Welcome to Silly Season!

It's predictable patter from the Hacks: anybody who has had a remotely reasonable season for Southampton will be linked with moves away. Largely because we have sold so many in the past two seasons. If they throw enough cr*p then if one actually sticks they will proudly say that 'you heard it here first'.

Shane Long is probably totally unaware of any approach, if players denied every rumour they would soon be busier doing that then anything else and set a rod for their own back, the reality is that probably neither club has made a bid

We had better develop a thick skin because insults like these rumoured offers and the pernicious meddling by unfriendly hacks is only going to get worse especially if we become a regular top six side. Take it a sign of our success.

I personally take no notice of any rumours etc until they happen. I mean, the bullshit yesterday was Liverfool was expected to bid 25 million and today 11 million. Idiot reporters making crap up while they twiddle their thumbs waiting for real news.

Does anyone know what the contract situation is regarding Shane Long and Sadio Mane. This is pure paper nonsense.

Once he was given his opportunity as a striker, SL certainly showed his value to the side with his hard running; tenacity and link up play with Mane, Tadic, Davis and Pelle. Just the same, nudging 30, if an offer of 25 million was tabled, the Club would have to take it, just as any reasonable offer for Pelle should be accepted. Credit to you Nick, you said from the off that Long was worth the 12m the Club paid any current offer around that mark is derisory given the season he's had.

Why would he want to step backwards? We'll finish ahead of both of them next year.
