Liverpool Chasing Yet Another Saints Star
Sunday, 30th Oct 2016 08:33

Liverpool are seemingly continuing in their quest to be able to put out a complete team of ex Saints players, but you will be surprised at who their latest target is.

Liverpool are being reported as being interested in signing Sam McQueen to solve their long term problems in the left back position with Leicester City also being touted as possible suitors for the Saints man who only made his Premier debut two weeks ago today.

McQueen has featured in all the games since with both first choice Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett Injured, but either this story is an agent making mischief or Liverpool have been at our last four games.

McQueen has made an impression in the last fortnight after coming on against Burnley, but the fact remains he has only started one Premier League game with 65 minutes in that Burnley game.

Given that McQueen has so little game time with this season's emergence in a new position of left back being his only first team action bar a 10 minute sub appearance under Mauricio Pochetino almost 3 years ago in an FA Cup game at Sunderland.

It cannot be denied that McQueen has taken chance with both hands and although I am a fan of Matt Targett, McQueen is better suited to the style that Claude Puel likes to play than Targett is, meaning that he is now probably the new deputy to Ryan Bertrand.

So how much actual truth is in this latest rumour and if so what sort of price would McQueen fetch, probably the first thing Saints need to be doing is signing him up to a new deal, at the moment he has only 18 months left on his contract and this deal would not be very highly paid given that it is based on his progress a couple of years ago when he was a teenager and trying to break into the fringes of the squad let alone the team itself.

That might suggest that this is his agent at work, giving Saints a little nudge that his client has made an impact in this last fortnight, before that Burnley game McQueen's career at St Mary's looked to be going nowhere and more money would have gone on the player going to a Championship club in January either on loan or permanently.

Now that situation has changed drastically and Saints need to move fast.

I've been singing his praises for the last few seasons after watching him in the friendlies and that was when he was an out and out winger.
He's worked hard and been patient waiting for his opportunity.

My other tip is Jack Stevens, although he looked a little uncomfortable at right back against Sunderland, he's always looked a good prospect at centre back.

I think McQueen has looked a class above Targett. Also I think he could play in left midfield. Hope we can keep him.

I expect Liverpool to bid of at least £20 million for Sam Gallagher following his goal for Blackburn yesterday.

The lad has played in what? 3 games as left wing back. Looking solid.. great first touch and crosses hv been consistently good. Nit the quickest though. Before Puel Mcqeen was looking at league loans.. and now 'talk' of transfers to Liverpool. I smell a dirty rat.

If we bow down yet again to the likes of Liverpool it will confirm my belief that saints academy is in fact an easy shopping ground for other clubs, let saints do the hard work and then go and cherry pick...this must come to an end , if the club wants to fulfill it's ambitions to both the players that remain at the club and their supporters it as to stand it's ground, we have become a joke in the eyes of the likes of Liverpool where we seem to be more interested in fulfilling their ambitions.....

This is complete tosh and it surprises me that you've given the story air, Nick. There are more important issues to address.
