Saints Set To Bring In Keeper
Sunday, 29th Jan 2017 16:48

Claude Puel is being reported as about to sign one of his former goalkeepers at OSG Nice as cover for Fraser Forster.

The keeper in question is Mouez Hassen and Puel is concerned about the back up he currently has for Fraser Forster, Alex McCarthy has been out long term with what was originally reportedas a hamstring injury and appear to be nowhere near a return to action.

That just leaves either Harry Lewis or Stuart Taylor and neither seem to have the level needed to replace Forster.

Lewis is still a bit young to break through and Taylor has not played a game for a club since leaving Leeds United, indeed he has only 7 appearances to his name since the end of the 2008/09 season.

That leaves Puel very short on cover going into a crucial stage of the season including a major cup final.

Hassen has played over 50 times for Nice under Puel but has fallen out of favour since his former boss joined Saints and approaching 22 he wants to get his career back on track.

We will have nearly twice as many keepers as we do central defenders!

Given those stats on Taylor why are we paying him money - give it to me, I won't play either but I'll be very happy...

If this is true then I suspect that McCarthy and Taylor might not feature in the club's plans for next season, only guessing of course. I do believe that we also have a Spanish goalkeeper out on loan which makes the whole scenario even more bizarre.

It's damning that McCarthy and Taylor aren't considered of a high enough level to replace Forster. Mainly because in my humble opinion Forster's level isn't that high.

I've a feeling that this is just lazy journalism. Only 2 more days to go and the bullsh1t reporting window closes.

highfield49 is right - Gazzaniga is on loan in Spain (he is Argentinian). He seems to be another Bart Bialkowski quite error prone and yet, if memory serves me, we offered him a 5 year contract last season!! After watching Taylor yesterday I dread to think what would happen if Fraser were to get injured. I agree with Puel resting many players yesterday. Before we beat Leicester we had lost 4 league games in a row. Saints play Swansea on Tuesday who have had 10 days rest after beating Liverpool. Injuries are piling up - I can remember Birmingham in a similar league position to us a few years ago when they won the League Cup, hardly won another game and got relegated.

I thought Harry Lewis played yesterday ?
He looks a great prospect but not up to premiere league cover yet.
