Stephens Or Caceres That Is The Question
Friday, 24th Feb 2017 10:23

Claude Puel may not know too much about William Shakespeare but the quotes of the Bard will be brought to mind this weekend as he makes his team selection in the centre of defence.

Hopefully the question that Puel won't be asking on Sunday is "Romeu, Romeu, where for art thou Romeu" but it will be a pun on 2b or not 2b that is the question, as he picks up his pencil and drafts his starting XI for the game at Wembley when he asks "Jack Stephens CB or not CB"

It is a hard decision and not an easy one, not least because neither is going to be a known quantity.

Of course Stephens has been at the club a long time, but it should also be noted that in the six seasons he has been here he has not been within a whisker of a game in the Premier League at any time, he is not one of our promising youngsters, he is 23 years old and without this crisis in the back four the likelihood is that at the end of the season he would have left the club, at best for a lower half Championship side.

I don't wish to run Stephens down, I'm sure he is lovely lad and will try his heart out, but that is not always enough.

Against that we have the experience of Caceres, I would hope that he has a high level of fitness, he will have been training for at least two months prior to joining Saints and you would hope that he will have upped that a little in the past fortnight.

Of course there is the question of match sharpness, he hasn't played in a year, however Stephens has little more of that than Caceres, a couple of games in the League cup plus a run in the FA Cup and after that he has only 3 Premier starts plus 2 as sub to his name.

Yes he does have a little more advantage, but to be blunt in those Premier League fixtures he did not in the main cover himself in glory.

So from a match sharpness point of view although Jack has the edge, I don't feel that it is that much of an edge to make a big difference and that the experience of Caceres would more than compensate for that.

The big factor for me though will be quality, I am sorry but in this area there is no competition, at 23 Stephens has not shown much to force his way into the plans of four managers in his time here, there is a good reason for that and that is he is not up to the task, I hate to write this and run down one of our players, but have to tell it how it is.

If he has what it takes at this level then he would have forced his way into the team long ago, he is the virtually the same age now as Virgil Van Dyke and Dejan Lovren where when he joined us, Toby Alderweireld was a year older, all three already had considerable experience at a high level, sadly Jack has not.

This all ads up to the fact that when you are taking on United's experience and guile you need to have a lot of that yourself.

Also there is the question of leadership, sadly Yoshida is not a leader of men, he needs someone alongside him to take command of the situation and guide him through a game, Stephens being so inexperienced needs that even more than Yoshida and playing them would be a case of the blind leading the blind, yet again another reason why Caceres experience might be a plus, it would allow Yoshida to concentrate on his own game.

All this adds up to the fact that sentimentality should not be a factor, Claude Puel will have to do what is best for the team, he has the advantage over me that he has seen Caceres in training, he knows his fitness levels etc, he will know what is best to do.

Having said all this though, Jack Stephens if selected will give it his all, the difference between a truly Premier League player and a Championship one is consistency, the ability to do it week in week out and not lose concentration or make mistakes.

Indeed we have seen that with Yoshida who has the ability and has put in some great games for this club, however they have been tempered by his lapses in concentration in virtually every game that mean that he has never been considered first choice at this club.

But Stephens like Yoshida has the ability to put in a big game, if he plays he could pull out all the stops and surprise a few people, he has the skill, he has the desire, sometimes they can be enough in one off games, they won't carry you through a League season, but sometimes it inspires a player to great things, that sometimes they have never achieved before and never achieve again, Stephens will know that his chance is there and will not let us down,.

But overall the decision for Puel is about probabilities and the probable answer to his dilemma in the centre of defence is that all things being taken into account Martin Caceres is the man for the job.

However perhaps the most apt William Shakespeare quote for this situation is perhaps not one of his best known to those who are not readers of his work.

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them."

This is very much going to be the case on Sunday.

I liked the Romeu pun - if we are saying that on Sunday then we are in big trouble, he is a key man.

"The big factor for me though will be quality, I am sorry but in this area there is no competition" - Yep that is it in a nutshell, if Caceres CAN play he MUST. Stephens will get a medal from the bench and of course may come on anyway.

Chris Baird made his debut(?) at Cardiff in 2003. OK, we lost the game, but he played well enough. It's got to be Caceres for me.

I think it will be Caceres. I think he was brought in for this game and also as a knee jerk reaction to a worrying decline in the league, on the back of some poor results and the loss of our 2 key defenders for different reasons. The Sunderland result has eased the concerns a bit in the league but until we have crossed the safety line we need to remember that after this weekend there are still wins required.

This will be hard on Stephens who has done his best and probably will still do if he does play. In truth, either option is a gamble, but from the point that we lost VVD and sold Fonte in the space of less than a week with a plan B for the latter, suddenly any defensive line up was/is a gamble.

Our midfield will be key both in attack and protecting our defence and ensuring that Man U are restricted to chances and stopping their passing, especially to key players.

Concentration and fitness will be key. It could be a 120 minute game.

I am a bit concerned that Puel will consider whether Caceres can play two games in a year and may put him on the bench.

I don't believe that Caceres was brought in specifically for this game, a knee jerk decision due too VVD getting injured yes, but cup final no.
The Boss and Board made the right decision in getting in an experienced CB for one specific reason, to help ensure that we stay in the Premiership. It wouldn't surprise me if Caceres has a bonus clause in his Contract, not to win the final but to play and get us to 40 points, when that happens Caceres, Manager and Board can all congratulate themselves on a decent bit of business.

I'm not sure about Caceres for the game on Sunday. That's got naff all to do with being sentimental mind and who gets what for what they've done to date, but because the new guy hasn't played a competitive game for such a long time. It's a big ask for a player to fit straight into a new team and put in a big performance. It's not quite the easy call some people are suggesting. I agree Stephens will give it his best job if given the chance, although I am not sure like you say Nick if that is going to be enough. And personally I think Yoshi has proved this season he can have solid games. I think if he can keep his concentration his pace is a good asset. I wouldn't want to be the one making this call.

If you want a lamp post in the centre of defence then play Stephens but if you want someone who is real class who has played against some of the best forwards in the Italian leauge and nowe what it's all about then you have to play Martin
The spine of any football team is important and if we put foster Martin
oriol manola there all international class

This is incredible. Nick I would have thought your selection would have both Stephens and Caceras playing and Yoshida on the bench. You couldn't hep yourself on this great occasion with your routine dagger comment. 'however they have been tempered by his (Yoshida) lapses in concentration in virtually every game that mean that he has never been considered first choice at this club. '

You really are a lower division commentator.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;

For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry God for Gabbi, England, and Saint George!'

Heart says Jack- it would be amazing if he played and had a game like he did against Liverpool-, but head says Martin, BUT only if Puel is 100% sure that he is fit enough. He would have trained with the squad last eeek in Spain, so Puel will (or should) know if he is up to it.

"sadly Yoshida is not a leader of men" - wasn't he Japan captain?

Of course it must be Carceras, he hasn't forgotten how to defend just because of a nasty injury. If he is fit enough and Claude said he was surprised about his current good level of fitness, he is a must.

Top class players like him don't get where they are by being stupid and lazy enough to let their fitness fall apart when temporarily out of the game. Even if his pace is a little off the ideal, surely his craft, positioning skills and mastery of the subtle arts that CBs have - like when to use the elbow or tug a shirt - are essentials for such a big match up against the likes of Pogba and Ibrahimovic. Stephens is light years away from being a world class CB on these measures.

Would we all be that surprised to see VVD trot out?

Les will insist that JWP and NR will start and that will be the worst decision he has ever made..
