LFW Weekend Championship Preview
LFW Weekend Championship Preview
Thursday, 19th Mar 2009 23:11

As the season rapidly reaches the home straight, LFW takes it's regular look at the forthcoming fixtures in this weekend's Coca Cola Championship.

Welcome back to LFW Weekend Championship Preview, with some cracking games on offer as the season seems to be rapidly to be drawing to it's end. The league's top two, Wolves and Birmingham, both face relegation strugglers this weekend. Mick McCarthy’s Wolves travel to third bottom Nottingham Forest while Alex McLeish’s Blues host Norwich City, who lie just a place and a point above the drop zone. Third placed Reading make the relatively short trip to South London, to play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in what is the day's late Sky game.

In the play off spots, Reading are Cardiff and Sheffield United, who are locked together on 63 points. The two face each other on Sunday in what is sure to be a massive encounter at Ninian Park. Sixth placed Burnley, just a point behind Cardiff and Sheffield United, face a long trip down to the south coast to play Plymouth. I'm very surprised that the FA didn't make this a midweek encounter...

Lurking just outside the play-off places are Preston, Bristol City and Swansea, who all face tricky looking away ties this weekend. Alan Irvine’s North End travel to bottom club Charlton, Bristol City are also in London to face QPR and LFW's Preview of the game will be online soon... Roberto Martinez’s Swansea are in Yorkshire to play Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Looking down at the wrong end of the table and with just nine points between 14th place and the relegation zone, a number of clubs need to pick up some results quickly if they want to be sure of Championship safety. Barnsley, who are just two points above the drop-zone, travel to Pride Park to play Nigel Clough’s Derby, themselves just three points ahead of their opponents. Level on points with Derby are Watford and Blackpool. The Seasiders are at home to second bottom Southampton while Brendan Roger’s Watford are away at Ipswich. Doncaster will look to continue their good form when they travel to the lifeless Ricoh Arena to play Coventry.
