Pellegrino tops the shortlist for the Saints Hot Seat.
Friday, 16th Jun 2017 14:48 by Arron Sanders

Saints have reportedly placed Mauricio Pellegrino at the very top of their now shortened managerial shortlist, our correspondent Arron takes a look.

It was confirmed on earlier this week that the club had relieved former manager Claude Puel of his duties at the helm, prompting the Saints chiefs to publicly begin searching for a new manager.

According to the Times today, the board have made Pellegrino their priority when it comes to the upcoming interview process for potential candidates for the vacant position.

It’s stated in the report, that Frank De Boer is also another name under serious consideration as also stated in yesterdays Daily Telegraph, but the former Alaves boss is said to be at the front of the queue to land the job.

Pellegrino led Alaves to a ninth placed finish in La Liga last season against the odds, with the side tipped to for relegation. He also helped them to an elusive Copa Del Rey final, only for them to suffer defeat at the hands of La Liga giants Barcelona.

The 46-year-old is unattached after resigning at the end of the season, and at the time it was thought his preference was to return to his homeland but Crystal Palace are also interested and the lure of premier league could be too big an opportunity to pass up.

If appointed Saints fans will be hoping he can follow in the foot steps, of his fellow Argentine compatriot Mauricio Pochettino's success and attractive style of play used during his time at the club.

Isn't that a mineral water brand? I know little about either, just hope he will not be out of his depth!

Tops the list "how???" Puel's record on paper for last season reads better than Pellegrino's a final and 8th in a much tougher league. De Boer "underwhelmed" . The Young German guy sounds good but not much experience and long contract so doubt that one will happen. Giggs "Really!!!". So that leaves

Tuchel "excited" but doubtful, but for me the outsiders seem better options if no TT. Stam " Interesting" or Slaviša Jokanović yes would be a surprise but ticks a load of boxes. As for the others mentioned by the bookies think their just having a laugh!!

If Nick is agreeable we could get together and manage the side. Incidentally I have never lost a game as manager so i must be better than some of the tardy names mentioned and Nick always knows best so could keep me in check. Salary negotiable but must be more than £1000.

Interesting developments. Pelligrino is an interesting choice - very similar mould to another Mauricio we know...!

What he did at Dep. Alvares was nothing short of magical. That's the equivalent of Barnsley coming into the EPL and securing a top ten finish at the first bite. Co-incidentally MP was drafted in after Alvares sacked the manager who got them into La Liga: another instance of decent result but considerable criticism about boring style of play and lack of goals. Sound familiar?

MP's style is very much in the mould of Pochettino: tactically flexible with a penchant for high press. He's known to keep everybody guessing and disciplines players to be able to change shape and focus several times during games. No rigidly adhering to styles and rotation policies despite them not working (again Familiar?)

Two question marks: he is untested in the English league, but his spell with Rafa at Liverpool (albeit dated now) means he is no novice. Of course, the Liverpool connection will inevitably draw the moronic comments from Liverpool fans if he joined.

Which lead me to the 2nd question mark: is he long term? Is anybody long term?! Yet you get the sense that MP will be potentially attracted to SFC with eyes on other clubs. It's a difficult choice, given that SFC's attempts to move away from that type of manager (Puel) didn't lead us to the promised land of the "next Wenger" type era.

Given Tuchel is out - and De Boer doesn't excite me - I'd give the Argentinan a try. At least his good mate Pochettino can put in a good word for us...

Any potential manager worth their salt is going to want to know how much money is in the transfer kitty. Without a definitive answer yet on Lander and Kat's relationship, if and how that works, must affect their decision. So maybe the Echo's statement on a 10 day maximum search for a manager means that we will know the outcome of ownership before then?
