Targett Is Newcastle Target !
Thursday, 31st Aug 2017 09:51 by Arron Sanders

Newcastle United are in talks with Saints about taking Matt Targett on loan according to reports from Tynside Arron Sanders takes a look.

According to the website Teamtalk they claim to have an exclusive on the potential loan departure of the young England U21 left back.

Saints rate the 21-year-old very highly, but with Ryan Bertrand and Sam McQueen ahead of him in the pecking order they are willing to let him leave on-loan.

Targett, who signed a new five-year deal earlier this month, has had a number of clubs enquire about him but Newcastle are in pole position to land him.

Newcastle are in need of a left back and Rafa Benitez's side, are now working hard to agree terms with Saints to secure a deal.

The deal could beneficial for both parties with regular first team football with a premier league, side be great for the youngster development and help him reach his true potential.

On the whole it seems that it expected to be a pretty quiet deadline day for Saints, but let's hope Les Reed has one more ace up his sleeve with an attacking player coming in.

Certainly though we are set for more outs than ins today on the South coast.

Is he really only 21?! Feels like he has been around ages! I'd love to see him get some Premier League game time - there was a time when he was improving pretty rapidly before all his injury problems, then McQueen came in and since then I don't think he's been able to get a fair crack of the whip...

I rate Targett above McQueen but understand why McQueen is currently above him in the pecking order. I don’t think he’d be guaranteed to start if he went to Newcastle, but with our large squad and no League Cup or European games it makes sense to ship a few players out on loan. If Targett can establish himself as first choice at Newcastle then that would be fantastic development experience for him.

Bit injury prone, not very good at defending and crosses that are simply hit and hope. Yeah! but apart from that?

Look if he is second choice to McQueen what else do we need to know?

Auf Wiedersehen, Pet!

Would have thought he's first choice back up to Bertrand, McQueen tends to come on a bit further forward. Bertrand and McQueen played well together under Koeman in a 3/5/2 with Bert as one of the CBs. If he plays good for him, no point him going to be second choice though - better to go as first choice to a championship club.

Sorry I meant Bertrand and Target played well together undergo Koeman / McQueen only started playing under Puel and as a LB as Bert and target were injured and we had Europa games.
