New Owner Watches First Game At St Mary's
Sunday, 24th Sep 2017 11:30

Saints new Chinese owner Jisheng Gao sat next to Katharina Liebherr with his daughter Nelly on the other side to watch Saints take on Manchester United.

Saints fans got their first glimpse of the man who now has an 80% controlling interest in Saints when he sat in the front row of the directors box alongside Katharina Liebherr.

So far not a lot seems to have changed within the club since the deal was completed a month or so ago.

But that is good, it shows that Gao recognises the strengths that the club has been built on and is not looking to change things for change sake.

The reality is that we cannot match the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea for cash, but the backing of Gao means that we have the financial strength to do what we have been doing but do it better, it won't mean we can compete for the truly best players, but we can still find the gems as we have done this summer with Lemina and Hoedt and get better players to play alongside them.

Hopefully Gao will stick to the blueprint that has served us so well and the warm welcome he received when introduced to the crowd before the game, will get warmer still as we continue to flourish on our own terms in the Premier League.

I'm glad he is showing an interest. Long may it can continue. I'm still skeptical about how much is actually going to change, but as long as we don't get plunged into an outrageous debt I'm prepared to stand corrected that this is a good move.
