West Brom Goalkeeping Crisis Ahead Of Saints Game
Tuesday, 17th Oct 2017 10:54

West Brom could be struggling to put out an exerienced goalkeeper for their trip to St Mary's on Saturday, but this does not always help us.

Ben Foster missed West Brom's draw at Leicester last night after injuring his knee playing with his son in his back garden and it look serious enough to also keep him out of the game at St Mary's on Saturday.

Boaz Myhill came in for his first Premier league start in 18 months and indeed Myhill himself has barely played for the Baggies apart from a spell when Foster did his cruciate knee ligament 2 1/2 years ago and he played a season and a bit.

But Myhill himself was injured in the game at Leicester after clashing with Jamie Vardy and although he managed to see out the 90 minutes after repeated treatment on his leg and at one point looking like he might have to go off, he is a major doubt for the game on Saturday.

That leaves Albion with only one other goalkeeper on their books with any sort of experience, 21 year old Alex Palmer who has a grand total of 11 league games on loan at Kidderminster Harriers in the Conference to his name, the last of those being over two years ago.

Palmer has yet to make an appearance for West Brom's first team although he has made two appearances in the Football League Trophy for the Albion U21 side, conceding 3 goals at both Walsall and Shrewsbury.

So if Myhill can't be patched up it looks likely that Palmer will have to play on Saturday for his full debut for the club, however as we found last year an inexperienced goalkeeper coming in is not always an opportunity to score goals.

22 Year old Jordan Pickford was an unheard of Sunderland reserve who although had spent several seasons on loan at various lower and non league clubs only had two Premier league appearances for Sunderland to his name when he was thrown in at St Mary's last season, he looked set to keep a clean sheet until Jay Rodriguez fired an equaliser in the 85th minute to earn us a 1-1 draw.

A year on Pickford is now Everton's keeper after a £28 million pound move and is ahead of Fraser Forster in the England squad and on the verge of a full cap, Alex Palmer will be hoping that his visit to St Mary's on Saturday will kick start his career in much the same way.

We are currently averaging 5 or less shots on target per game, so don't think they will be unduly challenged, whoever is in goal.

We're well matched with a goalkeeper Saturday then.

They could play rush or scramble keeper and we still wouldn’t score!

It is a sad state of affairs when we have to rely on the opposition to play an inexperienced goalkeeper to get a result.
