Charlie Austin Linked With Move Back To QPR
Wednesday, 18th Oct 2017 13:26

Charlie Austin is being touted for a return to Queens Park Rangers according to reports from West London today.

Charlie Austin has not had the best of times at St Mary's, after an explosive debut where he notched a late winner against Manchester United at Old Trafford he spent most of the rest of that season injured.

Last season he started well and scored a few goals but was then injured in December and would not play again for five months.

This season he seems to have been put down the pecking order by Mauricio Pellegrino, he is yet to start a game although he has come on as sub in 6 of the 8 Premier League fixtures so far, usually in the last 10 minutes of the game.

That has lead to speculation that he may depart from the club in the january transfer window and it seems that Queens Park Rangers could be heading the queue according to getwestlondon.co.uk who say that the Loftus Road club are 8/1 favourites to sign him in the January transfer window.

After QPR, the bookies have selected Burnley (12/1), Crystal Palace (16/1) and Bournemouth (20/1) as the other most likely destinations for Austin, although he is listed as 1/3 to remain at St Marys Stadium, with that currently seeming the most likely outcome if you believe the odds.

Most Saints fans would like to see Charlie Austin given more of a chance, he has a proven scoring record and although he may not be as mobile as either Shane Long or Manolo Gabbiadini he certainly knows where the net is.

before we go off on one, I would like to know who will be his replacement?
Another midfielder, or another winger, would be an assault on our intelligence.
We desperately need another goalscorer, who can compete with the physical needs, and is good in the air.. someone Gabbiadini can play off

Fine for me to let him go. He clearly doesn't fit the Manager's way of playing (whatever that is....). He has never quite cut-it with injuries. To me, he is a poor man's James Beattie - although every squad needs one of those. I think we should be aiming higher level but who will come to a team with no direction on the pitch and a manager who will probably be gone by January ?

Honestly never understood why we brought him here in the first place. Totally out of is depth at this level and a complete misfit to the Southampton Way. If he's a bit short of the readies I'll sub him the taxi fare back to Poole.

Given that the previous season to joining us he got 18 goals in 35 games for QPR in the Premier League I dont think it can be said he was out of his depth

Austin - not consistant enough, for Saints he's a luxury - we urgently need a goal scoring replacement.

According to the Mirror Saints are already in talks with Barcelona for Paco Alcacer, so a replacement might already be on the cards.

How many Mirror stories are founded in fact?

His fitness and lack of pace has always concerned me but he knows where the goal is better than anyone else in the squad. Hope he actually gets to start the next 2 games. Long should be the impact sub, using his pace against tired defensive legs.

I want to see him given a start with Gabiadini. If you take his goals to minutes played last season then you wouldn't consider getting shot. It's unfortunate he had the shoulder injury but it happens, before you write him off just remember the form he was in before he got injured and the support he was receiving then. some very narrow minds out there.

Austin certainly 'knows where the goal is' (or at least did) but such knowledge is useless if he is not on the pitch. We seem to have had a lot of these 'peripheral' players lately. He is 'linked' because he is not getting a game. The manager has to decide between the contrasting views in the above posts and either get rid of him or play him more often. Weeks on end on the sidelines can make you forget where the goal is for good.

If he does go we will need to buy another striker along with the desparately needed attacking midfielder.

I suggest that when Charlie Austin was knocking them in for fun at QPR the EPL was an easier place to score goals than it is now. There aren't too many teams with weak defences in comparison to Saints but there are teams with better attackers. Charlie would be better off being sold to a Championship side and a quicker, more talented tall forward being brought in. Have to say, though, that his poaching ability hasn't been used as he hasn't had anyone to feed off, just like Gabbiadini. Would like to have seen him alongside Pelle.
