Saints Latest Injury News ! Austin Could Return
Thursday, 2nd Nov 2017 15:02

Charlie Austin could return to action for Saints against Burnley on Saturday after returning to training on Wednesday Mauricio Pellegrino has confirmed.

Mauricio Pellegrino has spoken to the press about his squad's injuries ahead of the visit of Burnley on Saturday and it's good and bad news with Charlie Austin likely to be in contention for at least a place on the bench whilst Mario Lemina will still be missing.

The manager said.

“Mario continues in his treatment, I would expect after the international break maybe Mario can train with the team.

“But Charlie is training with us, yesterday and today. He was training well, but it’s just Mario that is the only one that is out of the squad.”

IT is good news about Austin, Pellegrino has few attacing options at present so having Austin back will be a bonus and offer him variations that he didn't have at Brighton.

The loss of Lemina is far less a blow with so many central midfield options to hand and against a Burnley side who are not prolific scorers away from home, Pellegrino might not have wanted to play his two defensive midfielders anyway, so resting our summer signing could mean a more attacking formation is forced upon the manager.

Otherwise it seems that Pellegrino has a full squad to choose from although the likes of Matt Targett and Josh Sims are probably not yet ready to return to the matchday squad.

Play Charlie Austin ?..well,by now Pellegrino has nothing to lose by giving Charlie a start, as the others who've had their chance first haven't exactly covered themselves in glory.

YES ...Gabbiadini has shown his skill, and it's not his fault he gets little/no service, but without his name on the scoresheet, a lot of people are disappointed. We can go on talking about Boufal's wonder goal, and to be fair each of his 3 goals so far could be contenders for Goal of the Season, but 3 goals ..in a year ! How long do we wait for the next one.? We all admire Shane Long for his tenacity and effort, but he comes into the same category as Boufal. Nathan Redmond wasn't a goalscorer of note before he came to Saints, and even allowing for his goal tally last season.. he looks to have returned to his " former self " . So we're back to Charlie.
Older fans and very much older fans look for a CF who can "put himself about" in the vein of; George Kirby, Ron Davies, Colin Clarke, James Beattie, Rickie Lambert and even Graziano Pelle...
Charlie Austin may not be cast in the exactly the same mould, but he looks the part, and given the chance might break this terrible goal drought with a few goals of his own.

So how about it Mauricio ?...let's give Charlie a few starts and see what happens, before you look to get him out of the door in January. You have nothing to lose now..... we've tried everyone else.

Ha ha. Colin Clarke. Brought back a long buried memory of Fratton Park in August 87 (I think), his two goals giving is a 2 - 2 draw. Thanks!

the first poster talking about boufals lack of goals well,he came on v stoke made the cross for yoshi to score scpred v west brom made the penalty with a pass for Long v newcastle earned the free kick for jwp to score and set up tadic and gabbi with good chances in the same game.Which is silght more creativity than the rest of them managed.
Judging him on lack of wonder goals is unfair and at the moment he is the only one trying something to break teams down and does some entertaining stuff even if it doesnt allways come off.He needs game time to improve.

Agreed saintpp. When it comes to unlocking defences he is in a class on his own, given the choices we have. Let's accept that not everything he does will come off and give him the backing he needs. OK, so sometimes he can seem a bit of a show pony, but that is a price worth paying. They used to say the same about Ronaldo.

It seems to me that the horse has already bolted as far as Sofiane Boufal is concerned, he is so obviously very pee'd off with his treatment at the hands of Puel & Pellegrino that his departure in January or May is pretty much certain to happen.

As for Austin, no way Jose!

my comments about Boufal and Long (saints pp) are only part of the general lack of goals from all the strikers. Of course "assists" are quite valuable (unlike another contributor who suggested a while back that assists weren't anything to count (!).

The original article talks about possible return for Charlie Austin. It's clear that CA has been "the bottom of the barrel" as far as Pellegrino is concerned, but I'm sure the majority of Saints fans are convinced that he's the type of striker that is needed in the Prem. whereas MP and Puel before him preferred the " lightweight " versions.

I admire the skill of Boufal and didn't suggest he HAD to score "wonder goals" , although those he has scored might come into that category. I don't care if "anyone " scores with a backheel from 2 yards, or scores with his backside..it's just that Charlie is the one who has been obviously ignored so far ....and he deserves a chance.
