Saints Face A Full Back Crisis Over Xmas Period
Monday, 18th Dec 2017 18:35

Saints are looking at a problem in both full back positions with Cedric Soares confirming he will miss the next few games on his twitter account.

Cedric Soares has confirmed that he will be missing for a few games after going off injured at Chelsea on Saturday and the problem for Saints is that Ryan Bertrand pulled up late in the game at Stamford Bridge with a hamstring injury and there is no news on that yet.

Although Saints have options to replace them both notably Jeremy Pied or Jack Stephens on the right and Matt Targett and Sam McQueen on the left, not to mention playing Yoshida or reverting to a back three, the fact is to miss one of them is bad enough, not to have both is a big blow.

The real loss though will be there pace, it could leave us very short at the back for some crucial games.

It is even for better...in a lot of aspects. Both injured full backs are not making a good season up to now.

Any chance of some good news? All feels a bit gloomy at the moment. My biggest fear is that Austin will wait until 1 Feb to have his season-ending injury and we will be left in a relegation fight with no goalscorers in the squad...

Cedric has been missing all season! Bertrand attacking crosses will be missed but others can do that job

Not sure how you can say Bettrand has not been playing well, I think he has been real class and he will be a bad miss if not fit.

Think we will see WP deployed a right wing back with Stephens on the right of a three. On the left McQueen offers more forward and more pace but is Target a better crosser of the ball and more natural defender. Main issue with playing three at the back is means even less likely to play Austin and Long/Gabbi together which still think we should try. I’d play Austin and Gabbi/Long with tadic justbbehind in front of Romeu and Lemina with WP and Target out wide. Leaves out Hoijberg, Davis and Boufal though :(

The one position where we have good options is full back. Cedric goes missing injured for half of every season so we're used to that and to be honest Ryan has not been up to his usual standard this season so losing him will not be as much of a loss as it would be normally. And to be fair Matt Targett is a better crosser of the ball than Ryan so having him in the team might actually help us.
