Saints V Chelsea The Preview
Friday, 13th Apr 2018 11:45

Saints go into this game knowing that they have to get something out of it if they are to keep within touching distance of safety.

There is no dressing up this as anything other than desperation time, we are now paying the price for a plethora of last minute goals that have cost us dearly, a plethora of defensive errors in conceding goals and now they have all conspired to leave us in the bottom three.

There will be those that smugly will tell anyone that listens that they knew this was going to happen back in September, but the reality was that none of us knew, we thought that the mistakes would be cut out and our luck would change, but neither happened, what we would do now for that late goal at Watford to have rightly have been ruled out or to have hung on and drawn against Palace when we were leading going into the final part of the game.

But we can't change that now, we can only change what happens in the final games, as supporters we can do one of two things, we can carry on moaning about Les Reed and Ralph Krueger and hurl abuse at those certain individuals that some love to hate and we can see our team continue to implode and get relegated.

Or we can do what West Ham supporters did a couple of weeks ago, we can remember why we support our football club, we can put aside the grievances we may have with anyone down from the owners to the players and we can get behind those on the pitch and help them turn things round.

This is a side low on confidence, it needs its supporters behind them, it does not need them on it's backs.

Yes it is not the supporters fault that the team is where it is, I know that, but we can now either help or hinder, I would say make your choice and if it's hinder then what is the point of you going to the game.

I have heard all the moans about the owner not investing, the way that Krueger and Reed are architects of our downfall and the way that these multi millionaire players aren't bothered.

But that isn't the issue tomorrow against Chelsea nor at any other game this season, the only thing that matters is getting behind the team and helping it perhaps pull off what looks an unlikely victory.

There will be plenty of time for a post mortem after the game, leave the moaning till then.

So I don't really care what Mark Hughes line up will be against Chelsea, all I care about is winning the game and i would rather say I played a minor part in that victory than play a minor part in creating a toxic atmosphere that brings the team down.

If it is all about grossly overpaid ego driven players then I would have given up long ago, football is what it is and for me it is about pride in Southampton Football Club, lets see everyone have that tomorrow, the players and the fans

I think Huddersfield’s next two games will define our season. If they lose them both then games like this one are almost a free hit for Saints to attempt to get points. Leicester, Bournemouth, Everton and Swansea are the games we have to get at least 7 points from to have any hope of staying up and 9 points to be safe. The showing at Arsenal gives me some faith, but we still got nothing playing against their reserve team.

I never imagined we’d be in this position, there were so many games throughout the season where we looked significantly better than the opposition we were playing against. As you say, we then lost to those teams because we failed to score and gave away cheap goals.

For my sanity, try to be aware of how much you might be whining during the game tomorrow. It’s bad enough watching poor football without listening to some idiot two rows behind constantly moaning.

You've got things back to front, Nick. What happened a couple of weeks ago at West ham was the West Ham players gave there all for the shirt....maybe because they feared for their safety if they didn't.....and the West ham fans responded to that. That's the way it's got to be at St. Marys tomorrow. The Saints players have got to give their all and, if they do, they'll get the supporters on their side. It's not up to us to inspire the team; it's up to them to inspire us.

LordDZLucan took the words right out of my mouth.
Exactly what happened and made easier for them by us letting the have two early goals.
Any crowd will respond to that, even ours- I think I remember that happening--Although it was in the dim and distant past!!

I hope every saints fan supports the team 100% tomorrow but if we dont get any points they should then let Krueger and Reed know that they are the architects of our downfall.

The fact we play first is a double-edged sword. Huddersfield (assuming we stay ahead of Stoke, the only side I think we can catch) have a very winnable game and if we lose it takes the pressure off them. If we win on the other hand....

We've been talking about 'must wins' for weeks and we've set a world record for not winning must-win games but tomorrow night we could be 6 points adrift if our rival win their very winnable games.

West Ham fans would have smashed the place up if they went behind no doubt about that. The same against Chelsea is needed ie go 3 goals up and the crowd will be there for the team. Go 2 goals down and most will be gone. So the players need to show the crowd they care from the kick off until the final whistle nothing else will do. Wim loose or draw the players need to show 100% for the 5 games after.
